Itinerary

DAY 1 - FLY TO TORONTO Toronto We depart from London Heathrow for Toronto, arriving late afternoon for a three-night stay at the centrally located Fairmont Royal York Hotel. A favourite of our customers, this magnificent hotel was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway. When it officially opened in 1929, it was the tallest building in the British Commonwealth. DAY 2 - GUIDED SIGHTSEEING TOUR OF TORONTO Ontario parliament Our morning guided sightseeing tour is the ideal introduction to this friendly, multicultural city. Your afternoon is free to discover Toronto at your leisure. Perhaps take in Chinatown or Kensington Market, browse the hundreds of shops in the grand covered malls or visit the excellent Art Gallery of Ontario, with its wonderful collection by Canadian artists. DAY 3 - AT LEISURE IN TORONTO Toronto Downtown Today you are free to spend the day at leisure, which gives you time to explore more highlights of Toronto, including Little India, Little Italy and Greektown. You could take a ride up the world famous CN tower, which has the world's highest public observation deck at 1,465 feet, as well as a revolving restaurant. Alternatively, you may wish to take a helicopter tour of the city. DAY 4 - NIAGARA FALLS AND THE CANADIAN Niagara Falls A visit to the magnificent Niagara Falls is one of the highlights of any holiday to Canada. We enjoy lunch in the Falls View Restaurant of the Sheraton Hotel whilst admiring the views over the Falls. Niagara Falls are all the more dramatic in winter, when thick snow covers the ground and the water freezes into giant icicles. We then return to Toronto to board The Canadian and begin our unforgettable journey in Sleeper Plus Class through the majestic Rockies to Vancouver. DAY 5 - THE CANADIAN SHIELD ON CHRISTMAS EVE The Canadian Our first full day on board is spent crossing the Canadian Shield - a wild land of frozen lakes, snow covered trees and isolated communities. Sleeper Touring Class guests enjoy use of the art-deco style Dome Car, its lounges and observation area. Here, you can relax with fellow travellers whilst taking in the passing scenery as you enjoy complimentary refreshments. During our journey, staff on board keep a watchful eye on the passing scenery, pointing out wildlife and points of interest. DAY 6 - CHRISTMAS MORNING IN WINNIPEG Winnipeg We arrive in Winnipeg on Christmas Day, where the train stops for the morning, giving us the opportunity to explore this railway city and there is time for a festive stroll, known as the 'Gateway to the West'. Union Station was built in 1911 by the same architects as the famous Grand Central Station. The walls are faced with local limestone and studded with prehistoric fossils from the ancient seabeds that once covered the prairies. We continue westwards from Winnipeg where Christmas Dinner is served onboard the train, crossing the prairies and arrive in the province of Saskatchewan this evening. DAY 7 - EDMONTON AND JASPER The Rockies After a brief stop at Edmonton in the morning, we begin the climb into the foothills of the Rockies, travelling through some truly spectacular scenery. Relax and enjoy the journey as we pass glaciers, lakes, plunging canyons, frozen waterfalls and soaring snow-covered peaks. The Rockies are not just a line of mountains, but the edge of the Western Cordillera, a complex array of plateaus and folded rock layers that stretch to the Pacific Coast. We make a short stop in Jasper, a quaint mountain town at the edge of the wilderness in the heart of the Rockies. The town is surrounded by tree covered mountains, blanketed in snow to create a fabulous setting. As you wander through the streets, past pretty houses and shops, it wouldn't be unusual to see a family of elk crossing the road. DAY 8 - VANCOUVER Vancouver The Canadian arrives into Vancouver this morning. We leave the train after breakfast and transfer across the city by coach for a journey up Grouse Mountain by aerial tramway. DAY 9 - AT LEISURE EXPLORING VANCOUVER Vancouver Vancouver enjoys a fabulous natural setting, with beautiful snow-covered mountains and deep fjords providing a dramatic backdrop to the urban landscape of modern skyscrapers. Today, we enjoy a guided tour of the city before a farewell dinner together at the 'Top of Vancouver', a revolving restaurant in a fabulous rooftop location with superb views of the city. DAYS 10-11 - VANCOUVER TO LONDON Flying home You are free until the early evening to enjoy this fabulous city. We transfer to Vancouver airport for our overnight flight to London Heathrow, arriving early in the morning of Day 11. PLEASE NOTE Please note that while every departure of this tour will feature the same excursions, the order may differ from that shown above.

Why travel with great rail journeys?

Great Rail Journeys is the UK's leading operator of holidays by rail. There is no-one who understands rail holidays like we do - and no other company offers a better choice of escorted holidays by rail anywhere else in the world.

We pride ourselves on providing you with a truly first class holiday experience, in every aspect of our tours:

The Best Rail Travel

We have been organising outstanding tours for more than 30 years. In that time, we have built on our detailed understanding of both UK and international networks, and are true rail experts. We ensure that we travel on the most convenient trains and (where applicable) the most comfortable sleeper trains.

On most of our holidays, rail journeys are made in the highest class available on the train - and this is included in the price of the holiday, rather than being offered as an upgrade option with more to pay. On the Eurostar we generally travel in Standard Premier Class, the first class option for leisure travellers, with a light meal, alcoholic drinks and tea/coffee served on board. On most holidays we continue in First Class on inter-city routes across Europe all the way to your destination.

Our New Departure Office At St Pancras International

Traveling on one of our European tours? To make sure your holiday gets off to a relaxing and stress-free start, we now have our own special dedicated departure office at St Pancras International station. From the very beginning, your Tour Manager will be there waiting to greet you. Then it's just a short step to your train and the start of your wonderful holiday experience.

Brilliant Hotels

In our three decades of experience, we have carefully selected our hotels based on their individual style, warm welcome and excellent service - ensuring that they meet the high standards our customers have come to expect. We have worked closely with several of our hoteliers for a number of years, and many of the hotels we use have become firm favourites with Great Rail Journeys' customers in that time; we use them year after year because our customers tell us how much they enjoyed their stay.

We know how important it is to stay in a hotel within easy reach of the attractions, and so our hotels are generally ideally located for the station and the places of interest. Each hotel boasts comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms and plenty of storage, whilst minibars, hairdryers, in-room safes and telephones are a feature in almost every hotel on our programme. The star rating of each hotel varies between 3 and 5 stars; we look for our hotels to have the perfect mix of excellent facilities, a great location, and which offer fantastic value for money to our customers.

Many Meals

We include many meals on our tours. These are served in the hotel - or sometimes in a popular local restaurant. As we dine together, meal times are often the most sociable times of the day. Included meals are clearly shown on each tour page.

Fantastic Excursions

Also included in the price of your holiday is the exciting programme of excursions listed in the itinerary. Our excursions have been meticulously planned, and have been carefully refined and tweaked over the years, to give you a wonderful balance of cultural, historical and social experiences of the regions you visit.

On most of our excursions, in addition to your Tour Manager, you will be accompanied by a local guide - enabling you to get a true insight into the area. In some cases, we include excursions to off-the-beaten-track destinations that simply would not be stumbled upon without this local knowledge.

What they’re known for
Luxury escorted train trips and river cruises that include excursions to classic attractions and relaxed itineraries for holidaymakers.
