What's this trip about?

Our fascinating Thailand and Laos tour combines one of Asia’s best-loved destinations with its least well known neighbour with immediate contrasts both apparent and intriguing. After the bright lights of Bangkok, it’s Luang Prabang in Laos - little more than a village by comparison, with quaint French colonial buildings and a charmingly slow pace of life. The beauty of the countryside along the banks of the mighty Mekong has to be seen to be believed as we learn about the many ethnic communities in this remote part of Indochina. We also explore some of the lesser known corners of Thailand - the scenic far north-east (the Golden Triangle) and the haunting remains of the Burma- Thailand railway in the south. And that’s all before spending some wonderfully relaxing days on the beaches of the Gulf of Thailand.

Accommodation

,Hyatt Regency Resort - Hua Hin The five-star Hyatt Regency is located on the beach about a 5-minute drive south from the centre of Hua Hin. The hotel is known for its huge lagoon-style swimming pool which meanders through the lush tropical gardens – there’s even a water slide! Another highlight is one of the country’s top spa resorts, the Barai, just next door and also managed by Hyatt. There’s a fitness room and tennis court and the resort’s dining venues include a multi-cuisine buffet restaurant, a Thai restaurant and a noodle shop and poolside bar. The 213 spacious rooms are well furnished and air-conditioned with bath, separate shower, hairdryer, iron/board, safe, minibar, cable TV, tea/coffee-maker, wifi (at extra charge) and a terrace or balcony with garden view. Dheva Mantra Hotel – Kanchanaburi The four-star superior Dheva Mantra Resort is located right next to the River Kwai, set around beautiful gardens and a large pool with a swim-up bar. The impressive colonial-themed lobby leads on to the main restaurant, whilst there is also a spa/fitness centre. The hotel’s Thai restaurant is on a converted rice barge on the river itself. All 115 air-conditioned rooms have bath and separate shower, hairdryer, TV, safe, tea/coffee-maker, minibar and balcony with garden or pool views.  Pakbeng Lodge – Pakbeng The Pakbeng Lodge is located just outside the small village of Pakbeng, surrounded by forest-covered hills and overlooking the Mekong River. The lodge’s open-air bar and restaurant also have river views and in the evenings you may be lucky enough to see the elephants from the camp on the opposite bank come down to the water’s edge for their daily bath. The 30 rooms are decorated with rosewood floors and local Hmong fabrics and have a shower, ceiling fan and a terrace with deckchairs overlooking the Mekong below. Note: depending on river levels, there may be a number of steps from the river bank to the lodge. Dusit Island Resort - Chiang Rai The four-star Dusit Island Resort is located in a quiet position on its own island on the Mae Kok river, a short drive from the centre of Chiang Rai. The hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and offers a large pool with pool bar, tennis court, jogging track, a fitness room and spa. The dining venues include an all-day dining café with an extensive buffet, an elegant top-floor steak restaurant as well as a Cantonese restaurant and comfortable lobby bar. The 271 air-conditioned rooms all have lovely views and feature a bath/shower, hairdryer, safe, minibar, cable TV, tea/coffee-maker and wifi (at extra charge). Eastin Grand Hotel - Bangkok The four-star superior Eastin Grand Hotel is located close to Bangkok’s Chao Praya River. It is the only hotel in the city with its own direct walkway to a Bangkok Skytrain station and is just one stop from the river or three stops from the famous Patpong night market. The outdoor pool on the 14th floor offers some unique and spectacular city views from its infinity edge and there’s also a pool lounge/bar and fitness centre. The hotel’s excellent dining options include an Italian restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, as well as an all-day dining buffet restaurant with an open kitchen and a huge variety of regional and seasonal dishes. All the 390 beautifully decorated rooms are air-conditioned with shower, hairdryer, TV, minibar, safe, tea/coffee-maker, free internet connectivity and wonderful views of the Bangkok skyline. Luang Prabang View Hotel The Luang Prabang View Hotel was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995.  This well preserved city is more of a sleepy back water than a modern metropolis. The peaceful location, great views of the countryside and valleys set the pace for the next couple of days.  The hotel has a pool and terrace bar, Sky lounge and restaurant offering local and international cuisine.   There is a spa and outdoor infinity pool offering panoramic views of Luang Prabang.  All the 74 rooms are nicely furnished in a soft soothing palette, with furniture crafted from locally sourced materials and have balcony, TV and phone.
