"We just finished our Tanzanian Adventure tour to Tanzania and Zanzibar. It was a dream come true trip! On safari, our guide Augustine, was stellar, and our driver, Meshak was wonderful! The lodges on safari were wonderful, food excellent. The Breezes resort on Zanzibar was lovely and the Indian Ocean is sooooo warm! Thank you, Odyssey, for delivering on all counts!"

What travelers are saying

"I would steer clear of Backroads until Covid is over. We were on the Costa Rica tour when a fellow traveler tested positive. The guides refused to require that all travelers and staff wear masks or be tested. They kept repeating that they were following CDC guidelines, but this was not the case. CDC guidelines state that after an exposure, one should wear a tight fitting mask for 10 days when interacting with anyone and should be tested starting 5 days after exposure. Our group of six was appalled by their policy and left the tour returning to the US. Also be aware that their biking equipment was very substandard. We were riding in the rain with bikes that were difficult to stop on steep slopes, as they were not equipped with disc brakes. They also were not equipped with mirrors or lights. The front derailleurs were also very poorly adjusted as most of the riders threw their chains during the ride. Meals and the hotel were very good. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/quarantine-isolation.html Two calls to Backroads have not been returned."

What travelers are saying

"We did the tour to Bangkok and Phuket in off season. We were concerned about the weather and if we would get a sub-par experience. But we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend Affordable World!! Great company. Very organized and thorough. Our tour guide was amazing! He explained all of our stops and even some extra tid bits about the country. We were transported in air conditioned vans/sprinters to every stop. We felt right at home!"

What travelers are saying

"We've done tours of Israel, Turkey, Guatemala/Honduras and the Yucatan with Archaeological Tours. Obviously we've had good experiences with each tour and each 'professor'. The hotels have been quite good and the food likewise. The educational experience and the other tour members have all been first rate. We have done a lot of travel in budget, upscale, adventure/nature genres as well as the educational type of tour. We have plans for more tours with archaeological tours along with other types in the future"

50-Plus Travel Tour Selection Trips

  • If choosing a wildlife safari, you may want to look for one that features shorter distances driving over rough, bumpy roads; staying local or flying between different reserves is worth the time and money in forgone sore bones.
  • Some river cruise lines, cycling tour operators and other travel providers market almost exclusively to ages 50 and up, while others also cater to younger clientele, including families; it’s your choice.
  • “Comfortable” lodging doesn’t necessarily mean “luxurious;” there are many budget tours that offer two- or three-star accommodations -- perhaps in small inns with lots of local atmosphere -- that you may find not only acceptable but adding to the charm.
  • If authenticity is important when you travel, look for guided trips that offer visits to local residents’ homes, schools, or work locations.
  • If you want to assist the local people in destinations you are traveling to, look for tour operators who “give back” to the communities you visit, such as making donations to local schools.
  • The size of a guided tour group can make a huge difference in your enjoyment of a trip; generally speaking, the smaller the group, the better the experience.
  • Be sure to notify the trip organizers and leaders if you have special dietary or medicinal requirements, physical impairments that may affect your ability to participate in all group activities, or other needs -- most will try to accommodate you if possible.
  • Be realistic about your physical abilities and stamina when choosing an adventure-oriented trip. There is more than one way to get to Machu Picchu.
  • If you have grown children and/or grandchildren, consider asking them to join you on a multi-generational trip; some travel providers offer special itineraries geared toward several different age groups.
