What travelers are saying

"It's hard to describe how lucky we are to have been able to work with Stephanie in planning our honeymoon to Japan. From the very beginning, Stephanie was friendly, flexible, and an absolute wealth of knowledge. We had several meetings with her leading up to our trip to come up with the perfect itinerary. Throughout this, Stephanie was mindful of our budget, without sacrificing anything. During our trip, Audley was available at all hours to help with anything and everything which was such a relief to know we had that resource available to us. I truly cannot imagine having planned this trip without all of Stephanie's guidance and knowledge- and cannot imagine taking another big trip like this without the help of Audley. Thank you again!"

What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"My first Avalon cruise/land tour to Vietnam/Cambodia was the best experience of my 80 plus cruises. We recently took the Avalon Egypt/Jordan cruise/land tour and it was the polar opposite. Most sites were awesome but the tour needed a guide in addition to the Egyptologist, who didn’t look out for the safety/best interests of the guests. I submitted a detailed review of Egypt and Jordan but have not yet heard back."

Egypt Tour Selection Trips

  • Remember to show respect for the local culture by covering shoulders and knees (a scarf can be very handy to cover up for mosques or temple visits)
  • Learn how to read numbers in Arabic to avoid being taken advantage of. As a tourist, you will most likely be quoted a heavily marked up price, so knowing what the actual written price is can help.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink - for this reason, salads are often best avoided in restaurants too.
  • Going on a guided tour often helps reduce any risk of getting sick from different food, but it is still wise to avoid street food.
  • Train trips from Cairo to the south are long and seats can be uncomfortable, so if your trip includes an overnight train, check if your tour company buys sleeper beds or seats if this is important to you.
  • Bus travel within Egypt covers a lot of ground, but stops are infrequent. So take advantage of the pit stops!
  • Swimming in the Nile is not advisable.

Additional details

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

As of September 2021 - a Level 3 Travel Advisory has been in place by the US State Department. This advises "increased caution" when traveling to Egypt, as a result of certain terrorist activities and threats, and military activity on the border.

But what does this mean? It is advised that when you are visiting Egypt to remain cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. It also means that the specified areas, e.g. the Sinai Peninsula and the borders, should be avoided. However, the Egyptian government emphasizes that all areas with a high concentration of tourism are heavily guarded to ensure your safety.

Yes, you can travel to Egypt, but there are certain precautions that you should take to keep yourself safe. The first is to know your country’s embassy location and number in case of an emergency which can be accessed through your country’s government website. You should also remain within the areas that are deemed safe.

Most government websites also provide a link to a site where you can input your information so you get messages from your embassy about safety conditions in the area. For visitors from the US, you can enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). Also, it is advised to remain away from any political protests or crowds.

Finally, we at Travelstride highly recommend booking a guided tour, rather than trying to navigate the foreign country yourself.

Guided Tours to Egypt

Guided tours are always advised. Because they are always well-informed and know how to avoid, as well as respond to dangerous situations, guided tours are the safest option for foreign travelers.

Certain areas in Egypt, like the Sinai Peninsula, have a higher risk of danger, and most to all tours do not visit these places. Before your trip to Egypt, you can always contact your tour company to see what specific precautions they take to ensure everyone’s safety.

What should women wear in Egypt?

Another common question that many people often ask before traveling to Egypt is, generally, what to wear?

A general rule of thumb for women should be to dress conservatively. This means covering as much skin as you can -- your shoulders and legs, especially. When surrounded by other tourists, you will likely be able to wear whatever you want, but it is traveling in between these locations, or at night, that you may run into problems. Certain mosques will also require you to cover your arms and hair.

Here is a list of items every woman should pack when visiting Egypt (or any other conservative Muslim country):

  1. Lightweight scarf: this scarf will be your best friend. You can wrap it over your head and shoulders when you need to enter a mosque without having to drag around an entirely new outfit.
  2. Sunglasses: Making eye contact in Egypt is considered to be flirting, so these will help you avoid the gaze of any men who might call out to you. These will also be useful in general as Egypt is a sunny place!
  3. Maxi skirt: Maxi skirts made of lightweight, loosely-fitting material are a great way to avoid getting too hot.
  4. Tunic shirt: Wearing a cotton or linen tunic-style shirt is a great way to beat the heat and make sure you're covering up. This style of shirt will not only be long enough to cover your hips if you are wearing skinny jeans, but they usually have high necklines and longer sleeves.
