Valentina at Global Basecamps did an excellent job organizing the trip for us, listening to our wishes, and then creating a custom trip that included both independent exploration and private-guided sections. She was very knowledgeable and patient with all our pre-trip questions (we had many!) and organized a great itinerary for us. We hit all the places we were interested in and everything went smoothly throughout the trip: hotels, transfers, excursions. The local tour guides were knowledgeable, welcoming, patient, and eager to share the beautiful places and interesting aspects of their country. A particular thank you to Luciano in El Chalten/El Calafate and JP and Camila at Estancia Cerro Guido, who went above and beyond to accommodate us.   • The floating islands of uros on lake titicaca seem like the sort of thing pixar would come up with. spend the night under the stars in a traditional island village
  • Whether you trek the classic inca trail, the inca quarry trail or take the scenic train route, trust us, this is going to be one of the highlights of your awesome lives
  • Don't worry, we won't hog all of your time. you'll have plenty of opportunity to bounce around cusco, digging deep into the pockets of incan history
  • The wicked witch of the west had her flying monkeys and red shoes. the witches of la paz have dried llama foetuses and alpaca blankets. while both sound imaginary, the witches' market in la paz is a true bolivian experience

  • Do your research and ask questions. Homestays can be a wonderful insight into local life, but occasionally hotels are falsely advertised as "home stays".
  • Be a courteous guest. Tidy up after yourself, and look out for house rules, such as taking your shoes off before entering. Your host should enjoy having you as much as you enjoy staying there!
  • Stretch beyond your comfort zone! You may encounter squat toilets, cold showers and strange new foods, but it's all part of the experience. And who knows, you may find you have a taste for boiled frog or fried crickets.
  • Spend time with your hosts. A homestay is more than simply renting a room - it is a chance to get involved with a family's way of life. And don't forget that the reason many people agree to host is to learn about your culture, too.
