What travelers are saying

"We booked a National Geographic expedition Holland and Belgium by River. The promotional literature promised a 14-day deposit refund window. The “invoice” was marked “non-refundable” deposit. We completed the National Geographic Traveler Information. About 8 days later we received the “Travel Agreement” to be signed. We both approved and signed the National Geographic documents. A Cruise Line Travel agreement was enclosed but had no signature line. This document contained language which was unacceptable. We submitted the signed NatGeo documents. The following day we canceled the trip due to the unacceptable Cruise Line language. Cancellation was made 12 days after booking and no deposit was returned. We were told on the phone that the refund deadline was triggered by the 14 day window OR signatures on the Travel Agreement which ever came first. This was NEW information. To date, we have received NO refund of our $1000. We cancelled our trip within the advertised 14 day window."

What travelers are saying

"Until Covid clears, I would steer clear of Backroads. We were partially through their June 2020 Costa Rica tour when a guest tested Covid positive. She and her husband were isolated. The rest of the group were offered wimpy masks. Nobody was offered Covid testing daily and masks were not required of the guests or staff. The guides kept repeating "not in the CDC guidelines." Our group of six decided that the Backroads response was inadequate so returned home mid-excursion. The hotel and food was excellent, but the provided bikes were inadequate. The front derailleurs were poorly adjusted, and most of the riders had the chains come off during the first ride. Hikes or bike rides were conducted in downpours. Disappointed for charging such a premium price."

What travelers are saying

"Our family booked a tour Nov 2018 and paid the balance in full Jan 2020. Mar 2020 rec'd an email saying that the tour is cancelled-COVID. ONLY choice is a 50% refund or 100% credit towards a NEW booking until Oct 31/2022. Credit can NOT be put towards our already booked tour in Jan 2021. VERY unhappy and unsatisfied traveller."

What travelers are saying

"My wife and I were on the Smithsonian Journeys Splendors of Australia and New Zealand between April 13 and May 2, 2018. Smithsonian is rated by this site as Luxury travel. However, Smithsonian "farms out" the logistics for their trip to Odysseys Unlimited. Odysseys booked within country air travel with the lowest cost air carriers. Flights were cancelled from Ayers Rock to Sydney and from Queenstown New Zealand to Rotorua. Another flight was significantly delayed so that we did not arrive at our Christchurch destination until 2:00 am, making for a really tired next day. Odysseys Unlimited compensated us $400 per person for missing a day in Sydney and paid for an excursion in Auckland for missing Rotorua. This was wholly inadequate, given that these were highlights of the trip. In addition, our tour guide was rude to several people on the trip. If Smithsonian Journeys is truly a luxury travel outfit, as we had believed, then they would not be farming out travel logistics to such a chinch company as Odysseys Unlimited. We will think twice about traveling with Smithsonian again, and so should others."

What travelers are saying

"Epic Journey to Africa with SmarTours Smartours was amazing in Africa. We had a great tour guide. 5 Star hotels and transportation. We embarked on many safari adventures across Africa. We had the incredible opportunity to witness the magnificent "Big Five" animals, including lions, rhinos, elephants, buffaloes, and leopards. We even had the thrilling experience of walking alongside wild lions and riding an elephant named Coco, accompanied by guides armed with rifles and shotguns for our safety, protecting us from lions, leopards, and poachers. Enchanting us with its grandeur, the mesmerizing Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Zambia, known as the "Smoke that Thunders," captivated our admiration as the largest waterfall in the world. Embarking on a journey along the Zambezi River proved to be a thrilling adventure, as we came across the majestic hippos that call its waters home. Additionally, we were fortunate to behold the majestic Table Mountain in South Africa and set out to daringly swim with sharks. On our Journey to ALL 7 Continents, our travel experiences have taken us to incredible places all around the world. It is a matter of great pride for us to declare that we have traveled to every single Continent on Earth, placing us among a select group of fewer than 500,000 individuals throughout the entire span of human existence who have accomplished this feat. During our extraordinary journey spanning all seven continents, we had the incredible opportunity to visit remarkable destinations: - The majestic Grand Canyon. Flying over an active volcano in a helicopter and embraced the thrill of skydiving. Niagara Falls - We explored the historic remnants of the Berlin Wall and immersed ourselves in the charming atmosphere of Nyhavn and visiting The Little Mermaid. - In China, we marveled at the vastness of Tienamen Square and were in awe of the awe-inspiring Great Wall of China. We had the opportunity to visit the Shanghai Tower, which is the second tallest building in the world, and experience its impressive height firsthand. - Down in the Land Down Under, we indulged in the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and enjoyed a memorable hot air balloon ride over the picturesque outback, where we even caught sight of kangaroos. We even partook in Cane Toad races. - We embarked on a journey to the mystical Machu Picchu, ventured deep into the enchanting Amazon Jungle, cruised along the mighty Amazon River, and admired the iconic Christ The Redeemer statue. We were fortunate to witness the breathtaking Iguazu Falls from both the Brazilian and Argentinean perspectives. Renowned as the second largest waterfall globally, Iguazu Falls captivated us with its sheer magnitude and natural splendor. - We braved the extreme elements of the coldest, driest, and windiest place on Earth—the untouched Frozen Tundra of Antarctica. We conquered the treacherous Drake Passage twice, braving the notorious Drake Shake and its towering 21-foot waves. It is renowned as one of the world's most perilous waterways. Exploring Antarctica provided us an opportunity to witness first hand the breathtaking ice formations, observe penguins, seals, whales and birds in their natural habitat. On March 17, 2023, at 3:45 pm, we achieved a significant milestone by officially landing at Orne Harbour in Antarctica, thus completing our mission to set foot on all seven continents. We had a heart-stopping thrill when our Arch-Nemesis, an Antarctic Fur Seal, nearly attacked us."

Additional details

Iceland Tours tend to focus on the outdoors and active travel. You’ll be outside a lot, and in the elements. This doesn’t mean all tours in Iceland are about hard adventure though. It’s very possible to find tours that take it slow, use more comfortable modes of transportation, and partake in “easier” physical activity.

Iceland is home to numerous natural attractions, several national parks, waterfalls, lagoons, caves, volcanoes, and beaches. Most of these attractions have several ways they can be enjoyed making choosing your Iceland tour as much about the time of year as about the type of physical activity you’re looking for.

Choosing When to Tour Iceland

Visiting Iceland is very different in the summer vs the winter. In the summertime, you have extended sunlight, and the opportunity for more outdoor activity. It never gets overly warm in Iceland. Summer will be cool, and sometimes rainy, so be sure to bring lightweight jackets, long pants, and shoes that can get muddy. One of the biggest draws of Iceland in summer is the Midnight Sun, which occurs on June 21.

In the winter, the main draw is the Northern Lights! Planning to see the Northern Lights is tough because they don’t appear on a schedule - sometimes the fog doesn’t cooperate and they remain shrouded. But a tour in Iceland will help increase your chances of seeing the amazing aerial light show.

What languages are spoken in Iceland?

The national language in Iceland is Icelandic, an ancient Norse language that has changed little from its original forms, and remains one of the oldest spoken languages in Europe. However, it is also very common for Icelanders to speak English and Danish (which are required throughout school) and other European languages.

What is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland?

The Aurora Borealis can be seen in Iceland throughout the winter, from October to April. However, the best sightings occur between December and February, and when there are no clouds.

What do I need to know about Iceland?

One of the first things to know about Iceland is that it is one of the world’s hotspots of geothermal activity. This is how the country got its nickname, the Land of Fire and Ice. You can find volcanoes all over Iceland, but only some of them remain active. These volcanoes make their presence known through the various hot springs and lava fields of the country. The only thing that makes them more beautiful is how they are contrasted by the many stunning glaciers.

Over Tourism in Iceland - is it a problem?

The short answer is yes, over tourism has begun affecting popular destinations around the world. Iceland is a very good case study. A rapid boom in popularity based on media influences (such as Game of Thrones) has caused the country to have to deal with a massive influx of tourists.

One of the most effective ways to address over tourism is actually to visit Iceland on a tour. This way of travel not only introduces you to destinations inaccessible to solo tourists but also creates safeguards against being overly harmful to the landscape. You’ll learn about the country from an experienced guide, and have a great time.

If your speed is more adventure focused, worry not. There are plenty of Iceland tour operators suited to you! Hike on lava fields, strap on some ice shoes and climb a glacier, and off-roading to explore Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.

Because Iceland has grown massively in popularity in recent years, over-tourism has been a hot button issue - particularly considering the many fragile ecosystems the country has. There are a number of Iceland specific operators, as well as global operators that feature tours to Iceland - and traveling with a tour is one way to help reduce your carbon footprint.
