Inca Trail Tour Selection Trips
- The Inca Trail is the most famous of three major treks one can take to get to Machu Picchu. The other two are the Salkantay Trek and the Lares Trek.
- In order to protect both the trail itself and the site at Machu Picchu, only 500 people per day are permitted on the Inca Trail. For this reason, it’s important to book well in advance!
- You cannot hike the trail independently. You must go with a guide, which you can arrange in country, but if you do this, beware of scams. A more sure way is to book a guided trip with a reputable company, of which there are many.
- Prepare for the altitude! If you’re not used to being in high altitude, it can be a shock, and put a damper on your whole experience. One good option is spending a few days in Cusco to acclimate.
- If you have the opportunity, it’s also a good idea to train in the months leading up to the trek. Thousands of people hike the trail every year - of all fitness levels, but being in shape will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.
- Be sure to break in your hiking boots well before embarking on your trek!
