What travelers are saying

"When my partner and I went on a whale watching trip with Sea Kayak Adventures five years ago, we concluded that it was one of the best things we had ever done - especially the encounters with the grey whales in Magdalena Bay. I decided that I wanted an excuse to visit the whales again and I found this in a plan to go back with my family so that we could introduce them to my family and share their joy in this trip. As always, when organising such a treat, I was desperate that it would be as good a second time. I need not have worried, under the expert guidance of Monica (who amazingly had been a guide on our first trip) and Fabian our family group were wowed by whales that swam close, sky-hopped, breached and swam to our boat, rubbed against it, looked us in the eye mammal-to-mammal and then let us rub their skin. Wow oh wow! My niece even discovered that one whale had shared two of its sealice with her! Simply amazing and thanks to Monica and Fabian for sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm and expertise with us, and to Vicky for the excellent food."

Visits

La Paz, Mexico City

Highlights

  • Explore our Sea of Cortez kayaking tours feature encounters with blue & fin whales in the wild and secluded camping on remote desert islands. To prepare for your day of Baja kayaking, you'll find yoga or pilates to be an ideal addition to a blissful Baja vacation. All tours are suitable for beginners.
  • See the islands of the Sea of Cortez contain striking natural beauty in a dramatic setting formed by rugged islands with high cliffs and sandy beaches, which contrast with the brilliant reflection from the desert and the surrounding turquoise waters.
  • The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers the perfect blend of kayaking, hiking and snorkelling.
  • Watch abundant wildlife, massive whales, sunny weather and warm, crystalline waters make the Sea of Cortez in Loreto Bay National Marine Park or Espiritu Santo National Park the best winter adventure destinations in North America and Mexico.

Visits

La Paz

Highlights

  • Encompassing 65 miles of road-less coastline and offshore islands between Loreto and La Paz on the peninsula's eastern coast, this is Baja's classic sea kayak expedition. This coastline is one of the most remote and sparsely populated areas in all of Baja.
  • The Sierra Giganta Range plunges into the Sea of Cortez, effectively isolating the area from the rest of the peninsula and creating a stunningly beautiful backdrop the entire trip.
  • We'll make camps on beaches that dot the base of these magnificent mountains. Canyon hikes take us into the desert interior, while kayaking allows an intimate exploration of the many coves and sea caves.
  • The clear waters of the Sea of Cortez teem with colorful life, and the snorkeling around the shallow reefs and vertical ledges is excellent. We see pods of dolphins, as well as massive whales
  • You'll paddle past towering volcanic peaks, miles of unexplored beaches and forests of giant cardon cactus. Prehistoric-looking frigate birds circle high above while squadrons of pelicans glide across the glassy water.

Mexico Tour Selection Trips

  • Mexico is large and diverse enough to warrant multiple tours; the Yucatan peninsula alone can easily fill more than one tour itinerary.
  • If you’re concerned about safety, check U.S. State Department warnings about which areas to avoid; though most of the country is perfectly safe for travelers.
  • If you want a taste of the “real Mexico,” choose a tour that includes accommodations in one or more of the country’s old haciendas, many of which have been renovated and reopened as luxury hotels.
  • Some tours include immersive Spanish lessons where you can learn the language as well as explore the region.
  • A good tour of ancient history and culture might take you to Mexico City (for the pyramids outside town), the Yucatan (for the ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum), and to Chiapas for the ruins at Palenque.
  • Guides at archaeological sites have special certification issued by INAH - your tour operator should take advantage of their services
  • Be aware that Mexico is not necessarily ADA friendly. If you need special assistance, please ask the tour operator for details on how they will accommodate you
  • If meals are included on your trip, ask if they are local specialities or prepared to cater to a foreigner's palate. The former will provide a more authentic experience, especially for regional fare - much of what you may think of as “Mexican” is actually heavily Americanized.
  • If you choose to stay in an All-Inclusive, check that there are day tours that will suit your preferences
  • Remember that standards for lodging are different than in other countries. What a tour operator might call 5-star may be different than what you would call a 5-star. Authentic accommodations are often a real treat, but some guests feel more comfortable staying with familiar international chains
