What travelers are saying

"Sad to see a once good tour company stumble and fall into mediocrity. That’s Tauck post-Covid. My May 2023 tour of Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley was done on the cheap by Tauck, yet cost me thousands of dollars extra as a solo traveler on a special small-group tour.

5-star hotels switched to 3 and 4 (without any compensation or explanation)… many more meals “on your own”… lots of “self-guided” tours of museums and chateaux and castles we knew nothing about… airline quality “rubber chicken” dinners, not in hotel restaurants, but in sad and isolated business convention spaces… poorly-trained newer Tour Directors (like the one on this tour) with limited experience traveling outside her tiny Canadian village or dealing with people from diverse backgrounds. She even confessed that this was a second gig job that took her away from her own business back home! You get what Tauck pays for, but unfortunately, not what YOU pay for.

Speaking to a “Guest Relations” agent was comically pointless. She tried to make everything my fault, which I now understand is par for the course with the “new” post-Covid Tauck. Please reconsider spending huge amounts of your hard-earned money on a tour company that has lost its way and no longer delivers."

What travelers are saying

"Most of the people on this 17-day river cruise was quite elderly and infirm. Therefore the complimentary excursions were painfully slow walking. Local guides mostly told stories of their own upbringing and the conflicts they lived through. There was not much history on any of the excursions; and none of the buildings we saw gave us an opportunity to go inside, even the paid excursions. The accommodations were excellent, except that we paid for the best veranda but could not sit on our veranda because for the first 5 days our ship was packed tight next to another Viking ship. Food was good, except for dinners which were quite mediocre and never captured the flavor of the local foods."

Romania Tour Selection Trips

  • Romania is a great all-seasons destination, since this Orthodox country celebrates the winter holidays traditionally; spring brings rains and blooms, summer is hot and sunny, and autumn will be a burst of color in the countryside.
  • Speaking of Orthodox, Romania is a unique blend of cultural elements: a Latin-based language, a conservative and traditional Orthodox religion, and slavic elements passed down through decades under communism.
  • Romanians, especially older Romanians, may still be wary of foreigners traveling, so don’t expect smiles and hugs while meeting. Younger Romanians, especially those born after the fall of communism, are much more friendly and welcoming by Western standards.
  • Tipping is standard in Romania, but varies based on the situation. In restaurants 5-10% is a standard tip for your server; for a day tour, tip your driver or guide up to 20% based on the quality of the experience.
  • It is possible to self-guide yourself through Romania by renting a car and driving. Be sure to pay close attention to road signs while navigating, as Romanian’s main roads are primarily two lanes and exits – especially those for some of the major sights – can be easily missed if you don’t know where you’re going.
  • Romania is often overshadowed by other European nations, so the country remains and off-the-beaten-path destination. This means that tourist traps are rare, and prices aren’t inflated for tourists in the city.
  • Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealand, and most European nations do not require a visa to visit Romania. The rules for acquiring a tourist visa may vary by citizenship. For trips that last more than 90 days in 180 day period, you will have to apply for a temporary residence pass. Vaccinations are not required to enter the country.
  • If you visit Romania during the hot summer months, especially around the Danube Delta, be sure to bring mosquito repellent. There is no malaria in Romania, but those pesky mosquitoes are still annoying!

Additional details

What’s the Weather Like in Romania?

Romania has four distinct seasons, with freezing winters, and scorching summers. Mountainous areas and the northern part of Romania, such as Maramures and Bucovina tends to be colder, while the southern region (Bucharest, Black Sea Coast) can be incredibly torrid, especially in the summer.

When is the Best Time to Visit Romania?

Each season in Romania has its own unique charm — it all depends on what you want to experience during your time in Romania.

The climate from January to March is incredibly frigid — which makes it ideal for winter activities. There are several ski resorts in Romania. If you’re doing a tour of the medieval castles during this time, the temperature sets the mood. If the dreary cold gets you down, don’t fret! Warm yourself up with a piping hot bowl of soup.

In April, the spring blossoms bring new energy and color to the country — especially after all that snow! Meadows, gardens, and hills are colored with the flowers, perfectly complementing the Easter celebrations that happen throughout the region.

May in Romania is notorious for rain. Visitors may actively try to avoid this climate, but this time of the year is magical, as that’s when the birds start to stir at the Danube Delta.

June to August marks the most popular time for tourists to visit Romania. Be prepared for the sweltering hot weather — especially if you’re in the southern region. This is the best time to hike the Carpathian mountain range — the weather is much milder up there, and it’s the perfect way to escape the bustling cities!

If you’d prefer to escape the crowds, September to October is a great time to visit Romania. You’ll also get to witness autumn in full swing around September.

There is no “best time” to visit Romania — it all depends on what your curiosities are, and which parts of the country you want to discover! From skiing, to kayaking, to walking and hiking, each season offers a different aspect of what makes Romania so unique.

Currency & Costs in Romania

Though they are formally part of the European Union, Romania has yet to adopt the Euro as their currency, instead using the Romanian ‘lei’ (often signified as RON). The lei is a relatively stable currency, usually in the area of 4 lei for $1.

This makes Romania a cost-friendly European destination, as a meal can be anywhere from $5-$10, and beer and wine are often just $2-$4.

Prices are higher for tourist-heavy activities like visiting the castle and ‘traditional’ dinners in big cities, but on the whole you can stretch your budget a lot farther when traveling in Romania than in Western European countries like Switzerland.

Safety & Security in Romania

For the most part, Romania is a safe country. In smaller towns and villages, the biggest hurdle to feeling completely comfortable will be the language barrier, as many older Romanians may not have a strong grasp of English. In major cities or top tourist sights, expect English in abundance, as well as police presence.

Overall, transportation is safe, but make sure you check your meters if you’re traveling by taxi. Scams and rip offs are rare, but if you ever encounter a driver who refuses to use a meter, there are several other transportation options, such as the train, bus, or Uber in the cities.

Of course, as with visiting any foreign country, be careful with your valuables and watch your pockets. With the proper precautions, you should be good to go.

While Romania is welcoming for all kinds of travelers, those who love to immerse themselves in new cultures and history will greatly enjoy Romania. Romania has also become a top spot for music festivals in the summer months.
