- Tipping is standard in Romania, but varies based on the situation. In restaurants 5-10% is a standard tip for your server; for a day tour, tip your driver or guide up to 20% based on the quality of the experience.
- It is possible to self-guide yourself through Romania by renting a car and driving. Be sure to pay close attention to road signs while navigating, as Romanian’s main roads are primarily two lanes and exits – especially those for some of the major sights – can be easily missed if you don’t know where you’re going.
- Romania is often overshadowed by other European nations, so the country remains and off-the-beaten-path destination. This means that tourist traps are rare, and prices aren’t inflated for tourists in the city.
- Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealand, and most European nations do not require a visa to visit Romania. The rules for acquiring a tourist visa may vary by citizenship. For trips that last more than 90 days in 180 day period, you will have to apply for a temporary residence pass. Vaccinations are not required to enter the country.
- If you visit Romania during the hot summer months, especially around the Danube Delta, be sure to bring mosquito repellent. There is no malaria in Romania, but those pesky mosquitoes are still annoying!

The climate from January to March is incredibly frigid — which makes it ideal for winter activities. There are several ski resorts in Romania. Though they are formally part of the European Union, Romania has yet to adopt the Euro as their currency, instead using the Romanian ‘lei’ (often signified as RON). The lei is a relatively stable currency, usually in the area of 4 lei for $1.
This makes Romania a cost-friendly European destination, as a meal can be anywhere from $5-$10, and beer and wine are often just $2-$4.
Prices are higher for tourist-heavy activities like visiting the castle and ‘traditional’ dinners in big cities, but on the whole you can stretch your budget a lot farther when traveling in Romania than in Western European countries like Switzerland.
Safety & Security in Romania
For the most part, Romania is a safe country. In smaller towns and villages, the biggest hurdle to feeling completely comfortable will be the language barrier, as many older Romanians may not have a strong grasp of English. In major cities or top tourist sights, expect English in abundance, as well as police presence.
Overall, transportation is safe, but make sure you check your meters if you’re traveling by taxi. Scams and rip offs are rare, but if you ever encounter a driver who refuses to use a meter, there are several other transportation options, such as the train, bus, or Uber in the cities.
Of course, as with visiting any foreign country, be careful with your valuables and watch your pockets. With the proper precautions, you should be good to go.
