The Vikings were some of the toughest people to ever walk this earth, and looking at the land that spawned them, it’s not hard to see why. Carved by the relentless North Atlantic for eons, the Norwegian fjordlands are a challenge that beckons hikers and mountaineers of all ages and abilities. This trip will put you on intimate terms with the great green hills, monstrous peaks, enormous glaciers, and flat-out gorgeous scenery of this isolated chunk of Scandinavia. Lace up your hiking boots and set forth in search of your own personal Valhalla. |
Day 1: Arrive at Myrkdalen Hotel
Fly to Bergen and on arrival make your way by the Flybussen service (payable locally) to the city centre. Then take a train (included) to Voss where you are met by a guide and transferred to Myrkdalen Hotel for a three night stay.
Day 2: Fjord Kayaking on Naeroyfjord
From Myrkdalen Hotel you transfer to Gudvangen (30 minutes) from where the kayaking begins. Get equipped and receive instructions before heading out paddling on the majestic UNESCO World Heritage designated fjord with steep mountains, thundering waterfalls and picturesque villages along the Naeroyfjord. The guide takes you along this stunning landscape and shares the history of the area. Transfer back to Myrkdalen Hotel for evening meal and overnight stay.
Day 3: Hiking to Prest and cycling in the Flam valley
From Myrkdalen Hotel you transfer to Kvammadal (20 minutes drive) the starting point of the hike. The path goes uphill to Hovden and gradually gets steeper to Royrgrind. From here the path flattens for the last part of the walk to Prest. The path is approximately 2.5km each way with beautiful views during the whole trip. The World Heritage area embraces some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world. Prest is a mountain located above the Aurland fjord. From the summit of Prest you will get one of the best views in the region. Approximate hike is 4 hours. After lunch the trailor is loaded with bikes and travel by car up the Flam valley. From Berekvam you cycle down the last part of Rallar Road, one of Norway's most spectacular cycle routes. Along the way you pass many farms in the valley which are still active year round. At the end of the ride travel back by car to Myrkdalen Hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Hike from Vikafjellet Mountain Plateau to Holo
After breakfast at Hotel Myrkdalen, collect the packed lunch and get ready to depart by minibus to the pristine mountain plateau Vikafjellet (15 minute journey). The hike goes slightly uphill the first 2km to the mountain lake Hestavatnet at 1,050 metres. From here you walk past another lake, Buforevatnet and then the path goes downhill through the valley called Vetle Grungen. At the third mountain lake Grungavatnet there will be a lunch break by the charming mountain farm Bjorndalsstolen. After the break continue on the path down a steep decline to the road, where you see the stunning viewpoint of the waterfall in Holo. The hiking will take approximately 5 hours. From here you are met and transfered on a beautiful drive (approximate journey time 1 hour) to Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand for a well deserved meal and overnight stay.
Day 5: Hiking to Raudmelen
Raudmelen is a mountain which towers 972m over the village of Balestrand. A hiking trail goes up the mountainside from the village to the top of Raudmelen. From the top there are fantastic views over the Sognefjord, both out towards the mountain plateau Stolsheimen and in towards Fjaerland and Leikanger. The first part of the hike goes along a marked nature trail, but soon turns off and upwards. After following the relatively steep path through the woods, you take a break at Orrabenken (370m) with wonderful views over Balestrand and the Sognefjord. Stop again at Burasi (575m), another fine resting place with lovely views. There will be many photo stop opportunities and the camera will never be put away! The path goes on up and along the ridge towards the top with marvellous views on both sides, over the green slopes to Balestrand and the rocky mountainside towards Esedalen. It is possible to take a shorter loop if the full hike is too demanding. The hiking today is approximately 6 hours. Overnight at Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand.
Day 6: Fjord cruise to Flam and RIB Safari
From Balestrand you take a scenic 2 hour fjord cruise to Flam, through the UNESCO World Heritage landscape along one of the most popular fjords in Norway. After enjoying lunch at Fretheim Hotel, you take to the water again for a thrilling 3 hour RIB Safari through the World Heritage Aurlandsfjord and further into the Naeroyfjord. A stop is made at Undredal, a little village located between tall mountains. The specialty of the village is the production of goats cheese, with a chance to taste it! You also hear about the tradition of cheese making and listen to folktales from the area. Along the way you stop at attractions and look out for seals, porpoises and eagles. Once back at Flam, you have time to relax before the evening meal. overnight at Fretheim hotel.
Day 7: Depart on Flam Railway
There may be time in the morning for a short walk depending on the departure time of the train. Say goodbye to your fellow travellers and take the Flam Railway, one of the most beautiful train routes in the world for a 1 hour journey. At Myrdal, change trains and head back to Bergen.
Day 1 Bergen
Arrive at any time. Meet your group for a welcome meeting before heading out for an orientation walk of Bergen.

Day 2 Bergen/Odda
Enjoy breakfast in the beautiful city of Bergen. Transfer by ferry and private vehicle along the Hardangerfjord to Odda, the base in the heart of the fjords. Enjoy an introductory hike.
Day 3 Odda
Known as the Valley of the Waterfalls, Oddadalen is a spectacular wooded ravine adorned with numerous beautiful waterfalls. Stretch your legs on a 10km (6.2 mi) hike along the Buerdalen valley. Consider today’s hike a warm-up to prepare for our full day Trolltunga excursion on Day 6.
Day 4 Odda/Folgefonna Glacier/Odda
Join an expert local guide for a hike across the frozen landscape of the Folgefonna Glacier. Strap on crampons, head out on the ice and take in spectacular views of the glacier.
Day 5 Odda
Enjoy free time today to relax in the beauty of the surrounding fjords, or opt to partake in any of the many activities this area has to offer.
Set in the breathtaking location of the Atlantic fjordlands, Odda is an ideal place to take a day off from hiking. For those looking to recharge today, opt to wander the quaint town that lines the coast with its multi-coloured residences or take a rib boat ride on the fjords. For those who are itching to get back out into the wild, take in the views from a bike or kayak, or consider preparing for your Trolltunga Hike by booking the Via Ferrata Sunset/Sunrise Extension for an enchanting night in the Sunrise Dome perched high above Lake Ringedalsvatnet.
Please note that if you choose to book the optional Trolltunga Via Ferrata Sunset/Sunrise Combo Upgrade on Day 5 of the tour, the transfers there and back are not included and cost approximately an additional £25 per person. This price covers the transportation both ways. For the upgraded Trolltunga experience it is recommended travellers bring a 30L day pack to carry additional supplies necessary on this option of the hike.
Day 6 Odda/Trolltunga/Odda
Gear up for the highlight of the week – a challenging full-day journey up to the most famous rock formation in Norway. Trolltunga (the "Troll's Tongue") grants breathtaking views from 700m (2,296 ft) above the Ringedalsvatnet lake.
Trolltunga is one of this area's most popular and challenging hiking destinations. It requires preparation from hikers. Prepare for 10-12 hours of hiking and rock climbing on a route almost completely on a gradient. Should you decide to opt out of the via ferrata route, you are welcome to do the hike only. Compared with our full-day hike early in the week, Trolltunga will physically demand more - with the reward of unrivalled views.
Day 7 Odda/Bergen
Leaving Odda behind, take a bus to Bergen. Trip ends on arrival in Bergen.
This tour will end upon arrival in Bergen. We suggest booking any onward travel for no earlier than 4:30pm.
