Description |
Be inspired by National Geographic photographers Michael and Jennifer Lewis during an eight-day Chiapas photo tour of enchanting Chiapas, Mexico. See one of the most exotic parts of Mexico and improve your photography skills. We’ll visit the colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas, vibrant indigenous villages, stunning Mayan ruins, and the lush mountains and exotic rivers of Chiapas. |
Day 1: Arrival in Palenque
The arrival point is Villahermosa, where our private van will take us to Palenque, Chiapas. Our first evening kicks off with dinner at one of the more interesting restaurants near the ruins, where we’ll get to know each other, talk about the week’s schedule, and we will answer any questions.
Day 2: Palenque Ruins
After breakfast, we'll have a classroom session for shooting and editing and workflow. We'll have lunch together then you'll go to the amazing ruins of Palenque for a tour and afternoon photos.
Day 3: Yaxchilán River Trip
We’ll depart early and have breakfast in our van while we drive to the town of Frontera Corozal where we’ll board a boat for the 45-minute ride up the Usumacinta River to the magical Mayan ruins of Yaxchilan. Motoring up the river with Guatemala on the right, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for crocodiles, exotic birds, and monkeys. After lunch, we’ll visit Bonampak, another archeological site with amazing murals dating from the 5th century. We’ll return to Palenque for the night where you can choose to have dinner near our hotel or venture into town.
Day 4: Waterfall & Mountains
We'll return the Palenque ruins where you'll likely encounter different light and a different atmosphere in the misty mornings. We'll depart for lunch and photography at the breathtaking Milos-ha waterfall. We'll arrive in the magical colonial town of San Cristóbal in time for an evening photo walk around town.
Day 5: Explore San Cristóbal
After an early breakfast, we’ll have a guided walking tour of the historic center’s narrow cobblestone streets, market and picturesque churches. Returning to our hotel for lunch we’ll download photos, then have an afternoon portrait session with models.
Day 6: Villages and Markets
We will visit the Sunday market at San Juan Chamula, one of the nearby indigenous villages that have retained its traditions. The church is one of the most unforgettable sites in this area (where photos are strictly forbidden). Afterward, we'll go to nearby Zinacantan to spend time with a weaving family who will demonstrate their craft and prepare lunch for us. We'll have time to download and edit photos when we return to the hotel.
Day 7: Chiapas Landscapes
Today is our nature and landscape day where we will work on capturing the richness of the local flora and fauna.
Day 8: Design Your Book!
You will have a free morning to visit the markets, photograph streets life or shop. In the afternoon we’ll meet to work on book layouts and talk about workflow. We close out our time together with an evening featuring a digital photo presentation and our farewell dinner.
Day 9: Travel Day
Private transport to Tuxtla for your flights home.
