The Great Rift Valley is a wide valley that extends from Syria in Western Asia, then down through East Africa, all the way to Mozambique in Southern Africa. This incredible geological feature is the result of a break and shift in layered segments of the planet’s crust (called tectonic plates). The separation of two plates pulling in opposite directions led to the creation of a deep valley dotted with lakes and edged by mountains and volcanoes.
