Description |
Welcome to one of our favorite places in the world to walk, Italy’s Cinque Terre. The stark contrast of the rugged Ligure coastline compared to the gently rolling hills of Tuscany make it seem like you are in a different country. But it is still Italy, where the food, wine and warm people and good hiking friends make for a fantastic adventure. This trip is perfect for small groups on a planned itinerary or for independent travelers. |
Explore the cities and the culture of Italy, trying Italian cuisine, you will pass from the ancient Rome to romantic Venice through the wine regions and luxurious beaches of Cinque Terre. |
Day 1: Sestri Levante, Liguria
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
For those of you traveling on we transfer to the Cinque Terre’. After breakfast we ride from Tuscany to the Cinque Terre and arrive in the lovely seaside village of Sestri Levante, Liguria. Welcome!
An old village linked to the sea with all its traditions and legends. Sestri Levante, like so many villages of the Ligurian Levant, is surrounded by an enchanting landscape of sea and mountains.
An ancient merchant and maritime center, situated on the border of the Gulf of Tigullio, Sestri Levante has become popular with Italians as their getaway destination with few foreign tourists. With an old and a new town, the original part of Sestri Levante is actually on a peninsula, with the beautiful bay Baia del Silenzio on one side and Baia delle Favole on the other.
After lunch we’ll meet our walking guide and transfer by train to Levanto for a late afternoon walk to Monterosso, the first and largest of the 5 villages of the Cinque Terre. The village is located on hills cultivated with vines and olives. The vegetation surrounds the built-up area like an embrace; its amazing beaches, its beautiful reefs and the sea’s crystal clear waters make this small village one of the most hospitable of the Ligurian Riviera.
We’ll be back home in time for dinner and our first taste of Ligure Cuisine, sampling wonderful seafood accompanied pastas complimented with pesto typical of the area.
Overnight Sestri Levante, Liguria (3-Nights)
Day 2: Portofino & Santa Marguerita
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
Today we transfer to Portofino to begin our walk to the secluded coastal haven of San Fruttuoso, which can only be reached by boat or by foot. The views will once again astound you when we enter lovely wooded path shaded by umbrella pines.
After a visit to the 12th-century Benedictine abbey of San Fruttuoso, we return to Santa Marguerita by hydrofoil to enjoy a guided walk through town and lunch by the sea.
Tonight dinner is at your leisure allowing you the opportunity to sample one of Sestri Levate’s fine restaurants or enjoy dinner in one of the “Five Lands.”
Day 3: Monterosso to Riomaggiore
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
This morning we take the train to Monterosso for our cliff side walk to Vernazza and Corniglia and then onward by train to Manarola and Riomaggiore. The villages are connected to each other by railway and a footpath along the cliffs. The land between the villages is a protected area where many types of plant and animal life flourish. This is one amazing place to walk!
Our walk continues along the richly diverse landscape as it changes from one rugged cliff to the next. Most all have sheer drops to the sea below and lined with palms and agaves that make up only a part of the area’s rich plant life. Our walks take us along ancient trade routes, through olive tree groves, grapevine terraces and pine forests.
Note, that unlike Tuscany, there is no road for a support vehicle. Our walks here depend upon us to be self-reliant. No worries though. We’ll explain in detail so you will know just what to expect in advance with options to take the train.
Tonight we gather for a well deserved farewell dinner accompanied by crisp regional wine and fresh seafood caught in the cool waters of the Ligurian sea.
