Gokyo Lakes with Everest base camp trek is the most astonishing trekking expedition in the world. In this trek experience the scenic beauty of the world’s highest freshwater lake system, the high peaks, the gigantic glaciers, huge wild stream and many more. A trek to the Gokyo lakes is a once in a life time experience. This trek has everything, a challenging trail, beautiful lakes, and reflections of high peaks on its waters, huge glaciers, high passes and reaching the base of Mount Everest. This is surely, one of the beautiful and challenging treks in the world.

Everest Base Camp Trekking is one of the world’s best treks, set amongst breathtaking high mountain sceneries. Magnificent landscapes, imposing and prestigious peaks, tapering ridges and colourful Sherpa villages contribute to turning this trek into an unforgettable experience. After flying from Kathmandu to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary) airport, the route takes you through the high Khumbu Mountains before finally arriving at the foot of Everest.

The starting point for all summit attempts, Everest Base Camp is situated on the Khumbu Glacier. We ascend the Kala Pathar (5,554m) for one of the highlights of this trek and from here one gains a lifelong memory of an incredible panorama of Ama Dablam, Makalu, Nuptse, Lhotse and the majestic Everest, or Chomolungma (Mother Goddess of the World) in Sherpa language. In Nepali it is called Sagarmatha which has many meanings including Brow of the Ocean or Mother of the Universe. She is undeniably the greatest of all mountains, standing at 8,848m. The impressive Tengboche Monastery (3,860m) is an important Buddhist monastery, which has the largest Gompa in the Khumbu region. Built in 1923, it has been damaged by both earthquake and fire. It has subsequently been rebuilt with help from the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation and many other international supporters.

En route, we will cross the large hanging bridge that is very popular and a lot of people take photos at this point. The trek begins to get tougher as it sets on an incline trail after this bridge and till we reach Namche. The trail between Jorsale and Namche Check Post will be a little tough and we recompensed that you walk at your own pace. if the weather permits, you may be able to get your first glimpse of Mt. We will have our lunch at Mongla and then proceed further to Phortse Thanga. We will cross the famous Phortse village that comes on our left hand side. The trail will begin to get tougher once we cross Phortse Thanga; however it is less difficult in comparison to the Mongla trail. Cho Oyu (8,188 m /26,864 ft). In fact, we will get the views of Cho Oyu through the trek. We will also get to see Thamserku and Khangteka on our back on this trail while Cho Oyu’s view will be on our front. We will take about 3 to 4 hours to reach Machhermo and it is an easy trail. Once we reach Machhermo, we can either take rest for the remaining part of the day or explore the surroundings.

Day 7: Machhermo to Gokyo (4, 800 m / 15,744 ft). 5- 6 hours

We will start early today for Gokyo. The trail will be of moderate difficulty level. The views from this trail are really beautiful. The trail will descend to a river and get a steep incline till the moraine of Ngozumpa glacier. En-route to Gokyo we will see 3 Gokyo Lakes. The very first lake is a small one and as we trek further we will get the second lake that is relatively bigger to the first one. We trek a little more to reach the 3rd lake, which is really big and the best looking lake among all Gokyo Lakes. The tea houses are placed on the bank of this 3rd lake. Stay over at a tea house with mesmerizing views of the Gokyo Lake.

Day 8: Gokyo to 5th Gokyo Lake.

We will be visiting the 4th and 5th Gokyo Lakes today. The 4th Gokyo is very close by from the 3rd lake. After visiting the 4th lake, we will trek further for another 1.5 hours to reach the 5th lake. The views from the 5th Lake can be considered as the best view in the entire region of Mt. Everest and is an experience of life time which you should not miss. The views of Gokyo Lakes are simply breathtaking from Gokyo Ri.  The sky scarping Himalayan ranges, that are placed as single line will be much clearly visible from this point.  We will return to Gokyo and trek further for 2 to 3 hours to reach Thangnak that is situated at the other side of Ngozumpa Glacier. The trail to Ngozumpa glacier will pass through the third Gokyo Lake and goes down on to the glacier, the trail goes and down on the glacier.  Once we cross the glacier, the trail is mostly flat.

Day 10: Thangnak to Zongla (4, 830m / 15,850 ft) via Chola Pass (5, 368m / 17,611 ft). 6-7 hours

This is the toughest day of our trekking expedition as we set ourselves to cross the mighty Chola Pass. It is one of the highest mountain passes in the Khubu Region. Threfore, it is best we start early and give ourselves enough time to trek at our pace. One we cross Thanganak, the trail begins to ascend and goes along side of stream. After a while, we will get flag pole and need to come down from this point. The view of the glacier on your left and the Chola Pass are mesmerizing from this point.

The trail then goes over rocks and becomes steep incline to Chola Pass, making it the toughest part in today’s trek. Please be little careful as this portion will have many lose scree that can cause you to slip. While it may appear an endless task to reach the Chola pass the scenic beauty it offers makes this effort a rewarding one. Some of the high peaks such as Lhotse and Baruntse are visible clearly from this pass. The pass is filled with prayer flags and is favorite spot of trekkers for photography. The view of the glacier that is below this pass is really spectacular. We will start descending the pass after spending some time at the pass. While descending, it is better be too careful as some places might be slippery. The trail is a complete downhill trek till Zongla.

Day 11: Zongla to Lobuche (4, 940 m / 16,207 ft). 3-4 hours

It is going be a short and easier trek in comparison to the previous day. We will trek from only 3 to 4 hours and reach Lobuche. On our way we will get to see the Chola Tso Lake and Thokla Pass memorials. The train then goes past a river bed and merges with the bigger trekking trail that is coming from Pheriche.  We will reach Lobuche and take rest in a tea house

Day 12: Lobuche to Gorakshep (5,164 m / 16,942 ft) and visit Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft). 7-8 hours

The smallest part of trek in beginning will be a flat trail till the Lobuche pass. After we cross Lobuche pass, the trail becomes uneven till we reach Gorakshep.  You will get to some gigantic views of Mt. Nuptse and Pumori. One we reach Gorakshep, we will keep our bags at the hotel land proceed for Everest Base Camp.  The trail will be very much like the one we just got before Gorakshep. Mt. Everest is not fully visible from the base camp and only a portion can be seen from the Base Camp. We will get down to the Khumbu Glacier to reach the Base Camp.  The base camp is at the glacier and has several flags are there. You will always find many trekkers forming a queue to get picture around the flags and signboards.  We will then return to Gorakshep after spending some time at the Everest base camp.

Day 13: Pheriche (4,371 m / 14,340 ft) after Kala Patthar (5, 645m / 18,520ft) hike. 7-8 hours

We will start early and hike to Kala Patthar. It will take about 3 hours to reach atop Kala Patthar. You will get a panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges from this point and also get a full vertical view of Mt. Everest.  If we can reach really early, then we can see the beautiful sight of sun rise falling on the Mt. Everest. After spending some time at Kala Patthar, we will begin downhill trek till Dughla and then trek on a flat trail to reach Pheriche.

Day 14: Pheriche to Namche.6-7 hours

This is going to be an easy trail, till Namche. The trail will go past the villages of Shomare, Pangboche, Deboche and Tengboche.  The trail between Deboche and Tengboche is an uphill trek where we to climb several steps to reach Tengboche. The village of Tengboche is very beautiful and is famous for the monastery.  We will be having our lunch at Tengboche. The trail will be downhill till Phungi Thanga. We will get a hanging bridge at Phungi Thanga and post that it will be an inclined trail, making it the toughest part of today trek. We will cross some more villages like Kyangjuma and reach the Namche Bazaar.

Day 15: Namche to Lukla. 6-7 hours

It is our last day of trekking in this journey. The trail is downhill trek for most of the part and goes along side of the Dudh Koshi River. We will pass by small villages like Jorsale and Monjo. While the trail is a very moderate one, the potion just before Lukla may be a little tough as we have to climb several steps.

Day 16: Kathmandu.

We will fly back to Kathmandu on the same flight that we took while coming. Most of the flights are in the morning and we can reach in Kathmandu before 10 AM. Spend the day at leisure and explore the historic city.

Some of the landmarks we visit include the World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhists shrine (Bouddhanath).  In the afternoon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members. You can also make your last minute buy of personal items as you will be flying to the Himalayas tomorrow.

Day 3: Kathmandu fly to Lukla then trek to Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft): 3 to 4 hours trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight in Phakding.

After breakfast, we will be escorted to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for an early morning flight to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft), the gateway destination where our trek begins. After an adventurous 40 minute flight above the breathtaking Himalaya, we reach the Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla. This is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world culminating in a dramatic landing on a hillside surrounded by high mountain peaks. Upon arrival at Lukla, we start our trek through the prosperous village of Lukla until we reach Phakding. To assist in acclimatization, we only have a short hike today. However, if you are interested in additional activities we can take a side trip to a nearby monastery.

Day 4: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,280 ft): 5 to 6 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight in Namche Bazaar

Walking through a beautiful pine forest, the track leads us along the Dudh Koshi River over many suspension bridges, one of which is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. First, we catch wonderful prospect of the glistening Mt. Thamserku (6618m). Through the settlements of Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo, we come to the check post and entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. We pass through the last village of Jorsale before reaching Namche Bazaar. The trail climbs through the forests and bridges until we reach the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. After a final steep ascent of about two hours we get first sight of Mt. Everest peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. Upon this juncture, we stop at Chautara to admire the view. We still need to hike about 1.5 hours to reach Namche Bazaar, a gateway to Mt. Everest and main trading centre of this region.

Day 5: Namche Bazaar: Rest day

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight in Namche Bazaar

This is the first of the two days set aside for “acclimatization”. Health experts recommend us to stay active and moving during the rest to give our bodies the best chance of acclimatizing correctly. We either spend the day taking a day’s hike to Thame or visiting Khunde or relaxing and exploring Namche Bazaar itself. Namche Bazaar is the main centre of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery and a colorful market each Friday evening and Saturday. If we trek a few hundred vertical feet during the day, it will help us to properly acclimatize. We have the opportunity to go to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can see displays related to the first Everest ascent, Sherpa culture and learn about the various plants and animals of the Everest region.

Day 6: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,870m/12,694ft): 5 to 6 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation:Overnight in a lodge at Tengboche.

After breakfast we set out towards Tengboche, enjoying superb views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam and close up view of Thamserku. Our trek follows more or less smooth trail with a few ups and downs that should not bother us as the magnificent view of the Himalayas keeps our company all through the journey. Along the way, we can spot many species of native wildlife such as; musk deer, Himalayan Thar and multicolored pheasants. The trail goes gradually down up to Kayangjuma. The path eventually reaches Sansa, which is the major trail junction to Gokyo valley and Everest Base Camp. The track continues through the pine forests and after we cross a prayer flag festooned bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, we reach Phunki Thenga, a small settlement with a couple of teahouses and a small army post amidst the alpine woods. After having a relaxed lunch at Phunki Thenga, we gear up for a slightly tougher climb through the pine forests before we reach Tengboche. Tengboche is a great place for close up views of Mt Ama Dablam, Mt Nuptse, and Mt Everest, and it has the biggest Buddhist Monastery of the Khumbu region. We pay our visit to the monastery the same day at around 3 pm to witness the ceremony in the principal and popular monastery of Everest region.

Day 7: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360m/14,300ft): 5 to 6 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight at Dingboche.

With mountains as its backdrop, the monastery at Tengboche looks more spectacular in the morning, so there will be chances for photographs before we begin our trek. We choose the upper trail on leaving Tengboche to enjoy the magnificent views along the way to Pangboche village and pass through several Chortens, Mani walls and small villages. The place where we stop for lunch not only serves delicious food but also allows a fantastic close-up view of Mt Ama Dablam. In the afternoon, we walk north to Pheriche or take the eastward trail beneath the towering north face of Mt Ama Dablam. From here the walk is fairly moderate as we enter the Imja Valley that gradually unfolds as we approach the confluence of the Lobuche River; we descend into the river and begin the last and steepest climb of the day up to Dingboche. On arrival at Dingboche, we will see beautiful array of fields enclosed by stone walls to protect barley, buckwheat and potatoes from the cold winds and grazing animals.

Day 8: Dingboche (4,360m/14,300ft): Rest Day

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation:Overnight at Dingboche.

We spend our second day of acclimatization at Dingboche. A refreshing breakfast while admiring a looming Ama Dablam (6856m/ 22493 ft) to the south really is fantastic. An ideal acclimatizing excursion is to climb the ridge on the north behind the village to give a better appreciation of Mt Ama Dablam, Mt Lhotse and numerous other peaks visible from Dingboche. Upon reaching the ridge, we can see three of the world’s six highest peaks, Mt Lhotse, Mt Makalu and Mt Cho Oyu. To the west, loom the towering peaks of Cholatse (6440m/21,126ft) and Taboche (6542m/21,463ft). As you look northwest, you see an array of peaks rising at the head of the Khumbu Khola valley. The Lobuche West and Lobuche East peaks are most dominant along with Lhotse which stands over 8500 meters (8501m/27,890ft). From our vantage point high on the ridge, we can scan the sweeping Imja Khola valley as well as the picturesque fields and pastures of Dingboche.

Day 9: Dingboche to Duglha (4,600m/15,090ft): 3 to 4 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight at Duglha.

We start the day with a climb to Duglha through the Khumbu Khola valley. The walk along the arid terrace is rewarding with awesome views of mountains on all sides. As we come to a yak herder’s place called Dusa, the valley begins to narrow and we continue through Phulung Karpo – the camp site of the first successful Everest Expedition in 1953. Above Phulung Karpo is Chola Lake. As we move on, the majestic view of Mt. Pumori (7138m/23418ft) comes into sight. As the trail descends and curves, Mt. Pumori disappears from view and we come across a roaring stream and after crossing a small wooden bridge, we ascend to Duglha. From here we can see the tip of Mt Nuptse as well as Mt Cholatse, Mt Thamserku, and several other magnificent peaks. Spending a night in Duglha is ideal for acclimatization purposes.

Day 10: Duglha to Lobuche (4940 m/16,207ft): 2 to 4 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight at Lobuche.

Beyond Duglha, we climb up the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. We pass through boulder-strewn slopes as we ascend Chupki Lhara, an eerie ridge top with dramatic mountain views. At the top of the ridge, we will find an array of stones with prayer flags used as memorials to Scott Fischer (American mountaineer) and 10 times Everest submitter Babu Chiri Sherpa (a Nepali mountain guide) who perished on a mission to climb Everest. As the trail drops to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, we find ourselves facing several great peaks – Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. We are now in the vicinity of Everest but the great mountain still remains elusive. Mt Nuptse towers to the right as the trail crosses the Khumbu Glacier. As we pass along a murmuring stream leaving the Khumbu Glacier behind, we start to enter the higher altitude, and may start to feel the effects.

Day 11: Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,170m/16,961ft) to Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,594ft) to Gorak Shep: 8 to 9 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight in Gorek Shep.

The trail to Gorak Shep goes ahead through the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. As we pass through the pyramid sign post, ahead on the trail we see the crest of the north ridge of Mt. Everest along with Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Nuptse, etc. A small ascent would take us to Thangma Riju from where we have a 360 degree vista of snowy peaks. Climbing steeply up to the top through the torrent of Changri Glacier, we catch our first glimpse of Kala Patthar, a grey-green knoll beneath the Mt. Pumori. As we reach Gorak Shep, we will find snow-capped mountains looming all around us including the top of the world – Mt. Everest. After a brief lunch and rest, we take the trail to Everest Base Camp through the once vast Gorak Shep Lake. Continuing straight ahead, we come through the Indian army mountaineers’ memorials. Only upon reaching the Everest Base Camp do we really appreciate the Everest climbers who brave the hazardous route through the Khumbu icefall. Mountaineer’s tents stand out in bright colors against the monotony of gray surroundings (especially in the Spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. Everest actually is not visible from here. By now we have met the ultimate objective of our trip.

Day 12: Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5545m/18,192ft)to Pheriche (4280 m/14,070 ft): 8 to 9 hrs trek.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight at Pheriche.

Today is the climax of our trip. We start early in the morning to catch the dramatic views from Kala Patthar and witness the first light of day caress the peaks of the mountains, particularly Mt. Everest. However, we need to be prepared for an early morning departure, amid predawn darkness and cold temperature (-10C to -14C) and there is always the potential for chilly winds which are quite common. Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse tower to the east even as Everest begins to reveal itself. During the ascent to Kala Patthar, we can pause to catch our breath at several outstanding view points from where we can snap great pictures. After several hours of ascent, we reach Kala Patthar. From kala Patthar, we scramble up to the top of a rocky outcrop marked by cairns and prayer flags. Mind-blowing Himalayan panorama unfolds before our eyes as they wander from one mighty massif to another. You can take as many pictures as you want with your camera, but don’t forget to imprint the vista into your mind’s eye so that it lasts a lifetime. On return to Gorak Shep, we have breakfast and wait for other participants to return. Those participants who wish to visit Everest Base Camp today will have an early breakfast as the hike to base camp takes longer (4 to 5 hrs) than the Kala Patthar hike. Upon returning to Gorak Shep, the group will have lunch together, then descend in the afternoon and arrive at Pheriche in time for a good night’s rest.

Day 13: Pheriche to Kyangjuma (3,570m/11,710ft): 5 to 6 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight at Kyangjuma.

Just after the start of our trek, we cross Khumbu Khola stream. Following the main Everest trail down the beautifully scenic valley, we pass through the villages of Tsuro Wog, Orsho, Shomare and reach Pangboche at the base of Ama Dablam. We cross the bridge over Imja Khola and pass through the Deboche village and reach Tengboche. We spend a brief time at Tengboche monastery, observe its many prayer wheels but unfortunately we cannot explore the altars inside, as the monastery opens only at 3 pm. From Tengboche, a steep descent of about 1500ft/500m leads through rhododendron bushes and fir trees to the Dudh Koshi River. We cross the first bridge over Dudh Koshi on our return trip at Phunki Tenga, then we pass the villages of Tashinga and Sansa before finally reaching beautiful village of Kyangjuma. Upon arrival at this juncture, we appreciate the gorgeous Ama-dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse and Everest!

Day 14: Kyangjuma to Monjo [2,840m/9,315ft]: 4 to 5 hrs trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight in Monjo.

The trail to Namche Bazar clings to the steep wooded slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends. We lookout for wildlife such as mountain goats, snow leopards and colourful pheasants while passing through the forest by the trail. We have enough time in Namche to shop and relax in the bakery that serves coffee and cakes and provides Internet access. A steep descent from Namche Hill leads to the suspension bridge crossing the Dudh Kosi river near the confluence of the Dhudh Koshi and the Bhote Koshi Rivers. We cross the Dudh Koshi River twice at separate locations before reaching Monjo. We are out of the Sagarmatha National Park after exiting from its official entrance near Monjo and finally reach Monjo Village. Not only is Monjo a quieter place to stay than Namche, it also means our porters have a less strenuous walk back to Lukla tomorrow.

Day 15: Monjo to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft): 4 to 5 hrs

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight at Lukla.

Today we enjoy the last walk at lower altitude in the Everest region. Most of today’s track is flat although we will still have some undulating terrain with a combination of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests and in the distant background, Kwangde peak. As we walk through the Sherpa villages, you will notice an impressive display of Buddhism and cultural practices associated with it as prayer stones dot the landscape and prayer flags flap in the wind. We cross the Dhud Koshi River three times through the prayer flags strewn suspension bridges and also cross one of its tributary, Thado Koshi once. The final ascent of about 45 minutes from Chheplung takes us to Lukla, where we stretch our fatigued legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. This last evening in the mountains is the ideal opportunity to spend some relaxing moments with the whole crew as some of our group may not be returning with us to Kathmandu.

Day 16: Lukla to Kathmandu (40 min flight)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Overnight in Kathmandu

Today we fly back to Kathmandu after our long mountain journey we will take an early morning flight as at times, the weather late in the day can affect flight departure. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we will be escorted to our hotel. It is best to have a spare day or two before your flight out of Kathmandu. The weather in this untamed area is unpredictable and flights can be delayed or cancelled if the weather is unsuitable for flying. To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, in the evening, there will be dinner and Cultural show hosted by Epic Adventures.

Day 17: Farewell Friend

Meals: Breakfast

We are saying good bye to the mountains as our journey in Nepal comes to an end today! There is nothing to do but trade emails with travel companions and organise the photos. If you have more time you can do some shopping or sightseeing. Approximately 3 hours before the scheduled flight a representative from Epic Adventures will take you to the airport. On your way home you’ll have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
