What travelers are saying

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Aswan Tour Selection Trips

  • There is a broad range of activities to take part in during your time in Aswan. Make sure to experience everything Aswan has to offer, from Egyptian history, to Nubian culture, to its more typical vacation activities: boat riding and fine dining.
  • If you booked a tour that begins in Aswan (most Nile river cruises usually do), but flew into Cairo, there is a comfortable sleeper train that runs between the two cities. Consider taking this option.
  • The word “baksheesh” means tip. Be aware that locals will request one of you for a multitude of reasons, typically “friendly” behavior, such as helping direct you somewhere.
  • Although Aswan is not known for its wildlife, the botanical gardens are a great way to take a break from the desert landscape, and see beautiful plants as well as many different kinds of birds.

Additional details

Aswan Weather & When to Visit

When is the best time to visit Aswan? For most people, this question depends on the weather, and more specifically, it depends on how well you can tolerate the heat.

Weather in Aswan fluctuates based on season, with the coolest time period being between December and January (where temperatures average around 70 degrees Fahrenheit), and the hottest in between June and July (where it averages over 104 degrees Fahrenheit each day).

Of course, prime tourist season fall between September and January, so if your primary objective is avoiding the crowds, maybe consider visiting during the offseason. If this is your plan, just be prepared to do most of your sightseeing in the early morning and evenings. However, be prepared: in March through May, there are frequent khamaseen winds, which cause frequent dust and sand storms.

Another thing that should be taken into consideration when planning a trip to Aswan (and Egypt in general) is Ramadan. Ramadan is the Muslim holy month of fasting, and as it follows the Islamic calendar, changes year to year.

During Ramadan, most Egyptians do not eat or drink throughout the day, and as a result there are not many cafés and restaurants open. Banks and other shops are usually closed for the much of the day as well.

Aswan Facts

  • The city has become an important center for hydroelectric power in Egypt since the Aswan Dam was built 1960.
  • Aswan is called “Syene” or “Seveneh” in the Bible, and is characterized as the Southern point of Egypt.
  • The city has historically been a center of trade, during ancient times it was especially known for its exports of ivory, gold, and camels.
  • Aswan is also known for its many ancient quarry sites. Many obelisks, shrines, and statues were carved out of granite from Aswan.
  • One of Aswan’s most famous features is Elephant Island. This island was named for its large boulders (which resemble elephants), and was a base for exploration of central Africa during the reign of Ptolemaic Period. Excavations have revealed hundreds of rare antiquities from this island, and most are housed in the Nubian Museum located on the island.
  • The Camel Market of Daraw is one of the largest in the world, and is only a short distance from Aswan (20km).
