What travelers are saying

"It's hard to describe how lucky we are to have been able to work with Stephanie in planning our honeymoon to Japan. From the very beginning, Stephanie was friendly, flexible, and an absolute wealth of knowledge. We had several meetings with her leading up to our trip to come up with the perfect itinerary. Throughout this, Stephanie was mindful of our budget, without sacrificing anything. During our trip, Audley was available at all hours to help with anything and everything which was such a relief to know we had that resource available to us. I truly cannot imagine having planned this trip without all of Stephanie's guidance and knowledge- and cannot imagine taking another big trip like this without the help of Audley. Thank you again!"

What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"I took the most amazing tour across Portugal and Spain through Bestway Tours last year. It was a 10 day tour visiting historic cities across the countries and was blown away by level of service and convenience the team provided. I've learned so much through the knowledgeable tour guides and enjoyed lots of delicious local food. I cannot wait to take another Bestway Tour in the future!"

"Everything organised by Karen at Chimu Went as planned which we were very grateful for. The only drama was the tight scheduling of some of our flights and having to run to get to next gate on time. Latam airline did very well and all our luggage arrived on time . The cruise on OceanEndeavour was truly amazing; the ice, the wildlife and the professional enthusiastic crew made our experience very memorable. Thanks Chimu"

Bolivia Tour Selection Trips

  • Hundreds of local tour companies try to capitalize on Bolivia's surreal beauty. On one hand, this means you will have plenty of options to choose from a wide range of activities. Deciding between all of these options can be difficult, however, which is where Stride's useful compare feature can come in handy!
  • Local transport can be a drag in Bolivia, one that often involves extremely long bus rides. Minimize transfer times by planning ahead and choosing a single reputable tour company for all aspects of your trip.
  • US Passport holders will need a visa to visit Bolivia, though visas on arrival are available.
  • Exploring the jungle here is less expensive than neighboring, more well-known countries, but choosing the right tour operator is key -- there are a number of shady outfitters. Be sure to look at all of the Bolivia tour operators and tour reviews when deciding which company to choose.

Additional details

How safe is Bolivia?

  • As of December 2019, Bolivia is in a level 4 Travel Advisory

There can be some safety concerns while traveling to Bolivia, but playing it smart is the best way to try to prevent problems from arising. Most of the crime is petty. Transportation can be unreliable, because of strikes. Pickpocket risks are high, so you’re better off keeping money and valuable items in hidden pockets, and leaving the bag at home.

There have been cases of mugging, where tourists are taken to an ATM and demanded to withdraw money. Make sure to use reputable services (such as taxis). Persons can pose as police officers and demand money, but an official officer will not do this. A copy of your passport with a proper visa is enough.

While it’s exciting to meet the locals, be cautious about who you speak with, as this can be a trap for petty crime. Traveling with a tour group can help ease some of the safety worries of traveling to Bolivia. You’ll have a tour guide that speaks the language, knows which places are safe, and can help figure out safe plans if a safety issue arises.

Note – as of December 2019, Bolivia is in a level 4 Travel Advisory, meaning do not travel. Civil unrest is occurring, from the demonstrations, strikes, and marches happening in major cities across Bolivia. Protests block major infrastructure and transportation hubs. Crowd control measures have been used during violent confrontations. Road travel is often impeded, and some flights (both domestic and international) have been delayed and/or cancelled.

Bolivia packing suggestions

One of the most important things you pack is proof of a yellow fever vaccine depending on what region of Bolivia you are traveling to. While not all places require the vaccine verification, it’s better to have it on hand rather than show up and get turned away. If you’re going to the salt flats, you’ll definitely need sunglasses.

The reflections are extremely bright, and you want to protect your eyes. The reflection can be painful and even cause damage to eyes, so make sure the lenses have UV protection and they are dark. As mentioned above with the safety issues, a travel wallet that can be hidden is important.

Bolivia is known for it’s high altitude, and the adjustment can be difficult for some travelers. Bring some medicine that will help with high altitude sickness. The water isn’t safe to drink either, so bringing some form of a water filter is crucial for Bolivian travel.

Is English spoken in Bolivia?

English is not widely spoken in Bolivia. Of course, you’re more likely to find people who speak English in the bigger cities, such as La Paz and sucre, and on tours to the major tourist destinations. If you stay in these areas, you’ll be mostly okay. If you expand out to smaller cities and towns in Bolivia, it’s important you know some Spanish, or it’ll make traveling more difficult.
