"First, let me say our tour guide Tomomi S. is hands down THE best tour guide I’ve ever had - knowledgeable, fun and made great efforts to ensure that we were comfortable and happy (MTSobek tour guides are independent contractors. Tomomi also works for other Adventure/Tour companies) Secondly, Japan is beautiful, clean and the Japanese people are very welcoming. The hiking in the national parks was amazing. It could have been a truly five-star experience if MtSobek had not cut corners so egregiously. The website said (at the time) group tours are 5-22 people. The tour gets canceled if the minimum is not met. When I paid there were TWO other people booked-a mother and daughter duo. Shortly before our departure date I called to see if the tour would be cancelled. I wanted my money back but Mt Sobek was “pleased to say that the trip would not be canceled”. In other words, I could not get a refund. At the last minute a guy named Matt signed up so there were four of us. Five days into the trip Matt left and took a train back to Tokyo. I said to him “You realize Mt Sobek is not going to refund you”. He said, “I don’t care, Mt Sobek scammed us.” With tax, the tour costs $11,645 for 13 nights. For that price there is an expectation that the accommodations Mt Sobek chooses would be decent and clean. We all fully expected a ‘traditional Japanese experience’ which often means no private bath and 8 out of the 13 nights we slept on futon mats on the floor. However, Mt Sobek consistently booked us in the cheapest Ryokans (hotels) in each area in which we travelled. Most of these hotels were unclean and very out-dated. One Ryokan they booked us in was listed on a hotel website for $40 USD/night when there were much nicer accommodations nearby for $100 USD/night. (The Japanese yen is way down, the luxury Park Hotel in Tokyo was $200 USD/night. A comparable hotel would have been about $800/night in Austin.). We were the only people staying in several hotels that accomadated many more people. The most egregious example of MtSobek’s booking the cheapest rooms is when we were booked at a large traditional ski lodge at the base of a spectacular mountain. It was beautiful on the website but had two very different wings. One wing was modern, clean and beautiful with simple beds. The other wing was very old (similar to a cheap Motel 6 that had not been updated since the 1970’s). The carpet and bathrooms were disgusting and like many of the Ryocans where we stayed the futon mats seemed as though they had not been cleaned In 30 years. Only after our tour guide checked us in did we realize we had been booked in the cheap rooms. I asked Tomo why. Immediately someone from MtSobek reached out to me and said, “gosh, I’m sorry you did not realize you were going to have a traditional Japanese experience”. Really? “Traditional” experience depends upon one’s budget. In the US, “traditional” to some people may be the Marriott, a Motel 6 or the Four Seasons Hotels. We were paying for a Marriott experience and received the one-star Motel 6 experience. Upon arrival in Tokyo I expected to be met at the airport by a driver (as many tour companies do). However, several days before our arrival dates in Tokyo, MtSobek sent an email telling us how to locate taking a city bus from the bustling Tokyo airport. That is interesting if you do not speak Japanese. MtSobek cleverly uses great photography and elaborate descriptions of the national parks and the hiking while using terms like “traditional Japanese experience with tatami-mat sleeping” to disguise sub-standard accommodations. At one point we were looking on-line at the very hotel where we were staying and did not even recognize it from the website pictures. The hiking was amazing. The group size was disappointing with just the three of us. I would absolutely recommend a hiking tour through Japan, just not with MtSobek."

"I just got home from a wonderful trip hosted by Chris Hill with Hands Up Holidays. He took myself and a few other travel advisors from around the US to Costa Rica to give us a taste in 4 days of what we could send our clients to do. Highlights from this trip were touring the amazing food markets in San Jose and then having a cooking class with Eric and Maria in Maria’s home and enjoying the fabulous ceviche and empanadas we made. Then touring the Finca Rosa Blanca organic coffee plantation and Poas volcanoe tour on our way to the Arenal area. Then we were able to enjoy Tabacon resort and thermal spa. Hot springs create warm pools and waterfalls through the property. Gorgeous and so restorative. Then we were able to explore the rain forest at Sky Hike and see the breathtaking views of the mountains, rain forest and Arenal lake while zip lining. Quite an adventure!! But what made this trip unique and so extra special was the volunteer opportunities we were able to participate in. It was only a short trip but the time we were able to work in the medical clinic that serves mostly refugees from Nicaragua was so rewarding. Being able to speak with the patients and see what this wonderful program FIMRC.org is doing first hand and contribute even if just for little while, really filled your heart. The medical facilities, day care, special needs programming and soup kitchen are all so beautifully run but with so much need for supplies, funds and extra hands. Thank you Chris for this experience!! What a special company this is! Chris Hill has built a wonderful company combining luxury travel, cultural immersion and volunteer opportunities and partnerships. This would be a wonderful experience for my clients that want to explore the world and gIve back to the communities they visit. My clients will love Hands Up Holidays."

"Thanks to Kudos, we had a spectacular and memorable trip to Peru. Five stars is too few to amply describe the amazing service and experience they provided us. Every hotel they placed us in was fabulous. We loved every daily activity they planned for us. We had the most incredible guide (Jeremy, who could easily teach grad school classes in Incan history) and driver (Peter), who shepherded us from one extraordinary site to another, including the iconic Machu Picchu. Highlights of the trip: feeding the baby alpacas each morning at the Belmond Rio Sagrado hotel, riding the Belmond Hiram Bingham to Machu Picchu, the spectacular Machu Picchu, visiting the the female master textile weavers and their children's school near Lake Pray, and culminating with the glorious Inti Raymi celebration in the Plaza de Armas of Cusco (from a balcony reserved for us by Kuoda)."

"Our week in Amalfi hiking with our guide Gennaro was great! The first day of hiking was the toughest, split up between the morning/afternoon and I think it was meant to test our ability and pace as a hiking group. My wife and I were the slowest, but the rest of the group was respectful. Gennaro is an awesome guide and has lived in Amalfi his whole life. It's very clear that he loves showing others his part of Italy and he was incredibly helpful at suggesting other things to do and places to see on our day off and in between hikes when we were in different towns. There is one hike I think the second day is a lot of downhill stone steps.. it was rough on the feet and some people took the next day off to recover and relax... and I feel like they missed a really great hike. The accommodations at the hotel were good for Italy.. since everyone rushes from hike to showers before dinners, there are issues with hot water at times. The hotel also supports breakfast, lunch and dinner for other hiking groups as well, so they tend to be either very busy or relaxed depending on the time of day. The menu for breakfast and lunch tends to be limited, but the heated pastries filled with nutella or jam are addictive. The pizza night was great and the amount of different and unique pizzas offered by Risorgimento was great.. we ate until we were beyond stuffed. The pasta/mozzarella class at the agritourismo was also great and it was nice to get hands on with the food we would eat. Other than that, we found that the pizza in all of the Amalfi coast and Naples was top notch and the Enosvapoteca wine bar near the town center and the winery near the agriturismo were hidden gems of the town. With that being said, we were kind of bummed out with the 26 Euro drinks at the port of Capri, Positano was really packed when we went... just a warning for those who visit. The getting up early, hiking all day, rushing to clean up before dinner can get tiring day after day, but I'm glad we chose to go with the flow everyday and see as much as we could."

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."
