What's this trip about?

Sail into a world where time stands still, beneath glaciated peaks, rainforested hillsides, and expansive waters that turn into secret coves you will explore. While Desolation Sound is one of the world's most popular cruising destinations, you will enjoy the area in a unique way: without the bustle of other boaters. Why go in May? By touring Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands in eary May you will enjoy the tranquil waters in the calmness of spring, before other cruisers arrive. Undisturbed by other boaters, the power and the beauty of the landscape will soak into your senses. Maple Leaf’s crew know the area well. Together you will explore among islands, sail across blue-green waters, meander into steep-sided fjords, and set anchor in hidden coves that are near waterfalls and trails to secret island lakes.

View Profile

Maple Leaf Adventures has been offering small ship cruises that feature the natural and cultural history of Alaska and Canada's west coast since 1986.

Our "cruise ships" are restored, classic sailing ships. Between 70 and 92-feet long, they are beautiful, comfortable and strong expedition ships.

We have a reputation as one of Canada’s finest tour operators. Trips with Maple Leaf have been named by Frommer’s travel guide as one of Canada's 6 "Best Travel Experiences", by the Canadian Tourism Commission as a "Signature Experience" of Canada, and by National Geographic Traveler as one of its "50 Tours of a Lifetime" and "Best of the World" in 2013.

Our multi-day, boutique expeditions offer guests the opportunity to experience intimately the most beautiful places on the B.C. and Alaska coast, in the company of expert naturalists or historians, crew and chef.

As a longtime practitioner of ecotourism, Maple Leaf pioneered travel in the Great Bear Rainforest and northwestern Vancouver Island, and has made significant contributions to conservation on the coast.

Ship & cabin information
SV Maple Leaf
Maple Leaf is a beautiful 92-foot schooner. The Coast’s Beloved, Historic Tall Ship Built of coastal Douglas fir, high elevation yellow cedar and mahogany, she is a tough expedition vessel and a work of artistry. Transport Canada Certified Maple Leaf is certified by Transport Canada as a passenger carrying vessel. This stringent, world-class desgination is the highest standard of certification for vessels in Canada (higher than most charter boats, sail training vessels, and fishing vessels, for example). Comfort and Beauty Maple Leaf’s accommodations are very comfortable. Mahogany and fir line the galley, dining salon and wheelhouse. The spacious main cabin is airy and divided by half walls and heavy curtains into four “cabins,” providing sleeping accommodations for eight guests. There are three heads (washrooms) aboard, all with hot running water and shower conversions. Unparalleled Access to Special Place  Maple Leaf has an extensive library and three decks. Her sea-kindly attributes, long range, sails and size allow you to access extraordinary wilderness areas of the coast most people will never reach. She is outfitted for engaging with the natural world: rigid hull inflatable boats for accessing wildlife colonies and remote beaches, kayaks, a hydrophone for listening to whales, small temporary tanks for exploring intertidal life, GoPro underwater cameras, presentation screen & more.
