What's this trip about?

This is a great program for families. The highlight of the adventure will be two mornings spent snorkeling alongside large congregations of Florida's endangered manatees, in the crystal clear springs that they rely on in the winter months. Afternoons and additional days will include exploring the grounds of Espedeco tree farm (described below) and naturalist guided canoeing or airboat excursions. The private lodging also includes access to a heated swimming pool and tennis court. Participants will stay in restored, historic houses on the private, family-owned 1100 acre tree farm, Espedeco. Local rangers, refuge mangers, and wildlife photographers will visit the group on the last evening and provide educational context for the value of preserving these vanishing corners of America's wildlands. This program will integrate the experience of viewing manatees in the wild with how that ability is dependent on the preservation of the native ecology of the region. The program leader will provide natural history and ecology lectures on the other evenings.

Since 1969, we have guided tens of thousands of travelers on life-changing journeys to explore the natural world. Again and again we have seen how conscientious nature tourism can transform the human relationship with the natural world by:

  • Making it pay to protect ecosystems—Growing the non-consumptive economic value of ocean resources through tourism means healthy oceans are valued by the communities and politicians who manage them.

  • Building an informed community of ocean advocates—Meaningful personal experiences with ocean wildlife and conservation issues turn our travelers into lifelong ocean advocates, armed with a deep understanding of the issues at hand and the tools to take action.

  • Supporting ocean research and conservation—By partnering with field-based research and conservation projects in the communities we visit, our travel programs provide financial support and manpower needed to study and protect ocean ecosystems both locally and regionally.

  • The Oceanic Society strives to provide life-changing experiences for their travelers that will inspire them to become more intimately involved in environmental conservation long after the expedition is over. Expeditions led by the Oceanic Society support  research and community development efforts in the areas visited.
