What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"We booked a National Geographic expedition Holland and Belgium by River. The promotional literature promised a 14-day deposit refund window. The “invoice” was marked “non-refundable” deposit. We completed the National Geographic Traveler Information. About 8 days later we received the “Travel Agreement” to be signed. We both approved and signed the National Geographic documents. A Cruise Line Travel agreement was enclosed but had no signature line. This document contained language which was unacceptable. We submitted the signed NatGeo documents. The following day we canceled the trip due to the unacceptable Cruise Line language. Cancellation was made 12 days after booking and no deposit was returned. We were told on the phone that the refund deadline was triggered by the 14 day window OR signatures on the Travel Agreement which ever came first. This was NEW information. To date, we have received NO refund of our $1000. We cancelled our trip within the advertised 14 day window."

What travelers are saying

"It was a very eventful itinerary that allowed us to see 8 countries in two weeks. The tour was very fast paced in order to accomplish the advertised program and it felt rushed. In order to travel to 8 different European countries, you have to expect that there will be a lot of coach seat/drive time. Our tour guide Jemma and coach driver Gabriel were very professional and focused on meeting Expat Explore’s tour destination requirements. Jemma always provided interesting information and tips about the cities and sites that we were visiting. Our driver Gabriel always got us to our destinations on time and safely. The included and optional excursions were conducted at a moderate to swift walking speed, at some places there was no time to take pictures. Some of us found it difficult to keep up with the group, and once caught up to the group, who were at a stopping/rest point, it was time to resume the walking tour which did not allow some of us to catch our breath. You have to keep in mind that this tour is a “budget” tour. With that in mind, some hotels were sub-standard. The Paris hotel had mold in the shower. As expected, some hotels did not have air-conditioning, and other hotels which did have air conditioning were not adequately able to cool the room. The included tour dinners and lunches were very average. We had better dining experiences when we were left on our own when we used our free time. Overall, we were pleased to see all European countries/cities/sites included in the tour. This review was submitted to Expat Explore to be posted. I believe that Expat Explore only posts 4 and 5 stars reviews on their website which gives a misleading impression of the services they provide."

What travelers are saying

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Sri Lanka Tour Selection Trips

  • Sri Lanka is so rich in attractions that you’ll need to allow at least a week to tour the major sites.
  • If you have a specialized interest in archaeology, history, birding, or the production of tea, gems, or spices, you can find tours that emphasize or include those activities and more.
  • Sri Lanka offers a surprising number of adventure travel tour opportunities, such as whitewater rafting, mountain biking, hiking, Scuba diving, and wildlife safaris.
  • Some tours combine Sri Lanka with extensions to Kerala in southern India, which is just a 45-minute flight from Colombo.
  • While you’ll need to pack light tropical-weight clothing for most of your stay, the air in the highlands is much cooler, so bring a jacket or sweater as well.

Additional details

Where is Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is an island country in southern Asia. Sri Lanka sits in the Indian ocean, off the south-eastern coast of India.

What is the Weather like in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has pretty ideal weather year round, if you’re looking for a warm getaway. The key to this is knowing what side of the island to visit at what time of the year.

The summer months (from about May to September) are a great time to visit the eastern and northern regions of the country if you want dry and sunny weather. This is when the west and south gets hit with rain.

The opposite is true for the winter. October through February brings sunny and dry weather to the west and south, and the eastern and northern part of the country gets hit with monsoon season. Though October-mid November brings questionable weather across Sri Lanka, with the possibility of rain and thunderstorms.

You can expect anywhere from upper 60s to low 80s depending on the time of the year and where you are visiting in Sri Lanka. Colombo sits on the western coast and averages upper 80s (Fahrenheit, about 30 degrees C) year round. Colombo is often a hot, wet, and humid city, with abundant rainfall  in the spring and fall. Kandy is pretty central on the island, averaging temperatures in the mid-upper 70s year round.

Who will enjoy traveling in Sri Lanka?

Anyone who loves beautiful nature, warm weather, wildlife, and awesome food will enjoy a trip to Sri Lanka. Dive with blue whales, watch dolphins leap through the water or visit one of the many national parks to get some incredible animal experiences.

One of the highlights of Sri Lanka is the wildlife. Sri Lanka has the biggest concentration of leopards in the world, there are opportunities to see wild elephants migrate, and other wildlife opportunities when visiting Sri Lanka.

Many people love to visit Sri Lanka for the religious and cultural experience. The country is filled with temples and history, and the annual festivals are a great way to experience Sri Lankan culture. Sri Lankans are friendly and genuine, and love to engage with conversation.

Scenic opportunities are everywhere in Sri Lanka. Enjoy the beautiful beaches on the coast of Sri Lanka, or take a train throughout the country. Sri Lanka is home to one of the most scenic train rides in the world, between Ella and Kandy. Spend seven hours on the train riding through the luscious green landscapes, through tea plantations, waterfalls, local villages and gorgeous mountain views.

Train rides are so popular among both tourists and locals, it’s almost an attraction itself! Because of the small size of the country, it’s easy to travel between landscapes of beaches to mountains to rainforest within a few hours. Sri Lanka is fairly affordable as well. There are few places that match the scenery and experiences that Sri Lanka offers, and there will always be something for everyone in the group.

Packing list for Sri Lanka

Beyond the essentials (passports, money, adaptors, etc.), many people are curious what to pack on a trip to Sri Lanka. Especially if you’re traveling around the whole island, there’s an opportunity to run into rain.

A lightweight rain jacket should be packed to keep you dry. Sunscreen and mosquito repellent are two more must pack items. If you forget, these items are purchasable once you touch down in Sri Lanka, but it’s good to be prepared and not have to spend time searching.

Sunscreen is important to protect the skin from the sun, and other forms of sun protection, such as sunglasses and a sun hat, are good items to pack as well.

In Sri Lanka, many places such as shops, cafes, and temples, require for shoes to be off, so slip-on sandals are recommended for easy removal. Sarongs are also recommended, as they are extremely versatile! Whether you need a towel, a scarf, a skirt, or a cover up, a sarong can do the trick.

Is Sri Lanka safe?

As of September 2019, yes, Sri Lanka is safe for travelers. A 30-year long civil war ended in 2009, which before, kept tourists away. Since the end of the war, tourism has be inclining and rebuilding, increasing the number of visitors each year. Investments have been made to accommodate the growing number of tourists every year.

There has been some terrorist attacks in recent years, which is why the U.S. government has marked Sri Lanka as a travel 2 advisory, meaning exercise with increased caution. As long as travelers use common sense and stay alert, most of the travel within Sri Lanka is safe for tourists.
