Things to do in Sri Lanka - Expert’s guide

1. Sigiriya

Sigiriya in Sri Lanka

Often referred to as the 8th wonder of the world by the Sri Lanka locals. One of the top tourist destinations in the country, the fortress has huge archeological importance, as it includes the remnants of a ruined palace.

When visiting Sigiriya, be on the lookout for the mirror wall. While the wall is now covered with inscriptions from visitors, when the king lived there, the wall could be polished enough where the King could see his own reflection!

2. Unawatuna

Home to some of the best beaches in the country, which is why it’s a popular destination among visitors. You may have seen photos of this place before, as it’s where the famous beach swing is. Jump on and soar above the water and beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka.

3. Udawalawe National Park

Elephants in Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka

This is the place to be if you’re on the lookout for Sri Lankan wildlife! From elephants to buffalo, leopards to monkeys, a safari in Udawalawe is sure to impress all who visit. The park was created for the displaced animals from the Udawalawe Reservoir construction. Safaris are three hours long, and take place in both the morning and afternoon.

4. Adam’s Peak

This mountain located in central Sri Lanka is a popular place for both locals and tourists. Many start the climb in the middle of the night so they can reach the top to watch the sunrise. There is religious significance to this mountain, and it varies based on who you’re talking to.

5. Temple of the Tooth

Temple in Kandy Sri Lanka

Buddhist temple in Kandy. The temple contains the most important Buddhist relic in Sri Lanka, a tooth of Buddha. The tooth is kept in a gold casket, so you can’t see the actual tooth, but the room is open to those who want to view. Make sure to check out the other temples, shrines, and museum found in the royal palace complex.

6. Galle Fort

Located in the same area as Unawatuna, but it entirely different than the normal Sri Lankan architecture that visitors will see around the country. A combination of British, Dutch and Portuguese influence, the fort was first built by the Portugese.

Spend a couple days exploring the area, including the light house, cafes and boutiques, and watching the sunset on the walls.

7. Yala National Park

Elephant in Yala National Park Sri Lanka

Wildlife sanctuary, home to animals such as elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, leopards, and various birds. The park sits on the coast of the Indian Ocean. While you are sure to see animals, visitors get to see what used to be a civilization. The temples, including the restored rock temple, allow visitors to understand the life of the 12,000 inhabitants who were seeking solace over 2000 years ago.

8. Dambulla Cave Temple

Golden buddha statue at Dambulla in Sri Lanka

Known as the golden temple, is the largest preserved temple complex in the country. See the Buddha statues and check out the five caves. Inside the caves, there are statues and paintings that help tell the life of Gautama Buddga.

9. Mihintale

Temple in Sri Lanka

Thought of as the birth place of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. There are several religious monuments in the area, including the Ambasthale Dagoba, Naga Pokuna many caves. Visit Kaludiya Pokuna, a local monastery, where many monks still practice their meditation. The climb to the top is steep, but manageable.

10. Coconut Tree Hill

Mirissa features a landscape that has attracted people from across the world. A mini palm tree forest grows from red soil, while overlooking the ocean. Because of the beauty, it can get pretty crowded during the day, so arrive early before the crowds if you want to get some beautiful nature shots.

We have used Explore many times and have always found them excellent. Our In Depth Tour of Sri Lanka can only be described as amazing. We saw so much of this beautiful country. Please also note that our tour leader Sujth Rathmayaka was outstanding. A very kind and thoughtful man that looked after the whole group, proving us with comprehensive and interesting information on everywhere we visited.

The hotel on the first night was of a low standard- very noisy - like a cheap backpacker hotel the music from the roof top bar did not stop until early hrs of the morning I would expect better from Explore the fan knob etc all the people I spoke to in the group stated the same thing
Most of the hotels and stays were of a high standard though11

Explore offers interesting itineraries to a variety of countries, but nothing out of the ordinary or unusual. Accomodation tends to be middle of road, with mix of hotels, camps, home stays depending on trip. Transportation is always good—safe drivers. Tour leaders are often local to country which often provides knowledge, language skills, and overall ease. Booking is easy on line, but communication can be slow. Be savvy with your money, and shop around, but Explore is usually good value for money.

I would recommend this tour to travellers interested in the Buddhist culture. Any traveller should check the average weather before booking. Personally, I feel I should have travelled earlier, when the humidity levels would have been more comfortable. Day start was, on the whole, not too early and not too late. I didn’t participate in either of the two early walks/hikes, so cannot comment. There were a few participants who didn’t like “spicy food”, so I’m thinking this aspect of the trip should be highlighted pre departure. Our trip coincided with Buddhist New Year - so we enjoyed some very quiet streets in Colombo at the end of the trip - bliss!

A great trip with such a varied itinerary. So many highlights, from ancient cities and iconic temples to elephant safaris and walking among the tea plantations. Other highlights were the early-morning Lion's Rock ascent, the splendid botanical gardens in Kandy, and the dramatic train ride crossing the Nine Arches Bridge.
Our guide Nala has a great local knowledge and always enthusiastic to answer questions.
The hotels are generally excellent with spacious rooms. Most of the hotel rooms have UK-style sockets, but one or two places just have the local round-pin sockets so it's worth taking a Type D travel adaptor.
Worth changing some money into SL rupees at the airport on arrival, as the exchange rates are the same as in the towns. Cards are widely accepted at larger restaurants and shops.

Sri Lanka in Depth + Maldive Dhoni Cruise
The Sri Lanka section started very full on, but did calm down. The Maldives dhoni cruise was a fantastic way to finish, particularly as we had come from 53 days in India, independently organised that was also full on.
Sri Lanka was a bit like a cleaner, calmer India. We saw much more on safari there than India. We didn't go whale watching as we were a bit late in the season, and we were going on to the Maldives. George, our guide was very organised and pleasant to be with.
The cruise was fab, we were 'lucky' that our expected boat had problems so we were upgraded to one with AC overnight which was a joy as it was exceptionally hot (48 reported on an island one day). The guide, Moosa, and all the crew were great with the chef creating amazing meals from a very small galley.
We had a great set of fellow travellers and had a wonderful time
