What travelers are saying

"My wife and I were on the Smithsonian Journeys Splendors of Australia and New Zealand between April 13 and May 2, 2018. Smithsonian is rated by this site as Luxury travel. However, Smithsonian "farms out" the logistics for their trip to Odysseys Unlimited. Odysseys booked within country air travel with the lowest cost air carriers. Flights were cancelled from Ayers Rock to Sydney and from Queenstown New Zealand to Rotorua. Another flight was significantly delayed so that we did not arrive at our Christchurch destination until 2:00 am, making for a really tired next day. Odysseys Unlimited compensated us $400 per person for missing a day in Sydney and paid for an excursion in Auckland for missing Rotorua. This was wholly inadequate, given that these were highlights of the trip. In addition, our tour guide was rude to several people on the trip. If Smithsonian Journeys is truly a luxury travel outfit, as we had believed, then they would not be farming out travel logistics to such a chinch company as Odysseys Unlimited. We will think twice about traveling with Smithsonian again, and so should others."

What travelers are saying

"My first Avalon cruise/land tour to Vietnam/Cambodia was the best experience of my 80 plus cruises. We recently took the Avalon Egypt/Jordan cruise/land tour and it was the polar opposite. Most sites were awesome but the tour needed a guide in addition to the Egyptologist, who didn’t look out for the safety/best interests of the guests. I submitted a detailed review of Egypt and Jordan but have not yet heard back."

Seine River Tour Selection Trips

  • May through September is the most popular (and expensive) season on the Seine (September often offers the most pleasant weather with fewer crowds).
  • CroisiEurope, a French-based river cruise line, is now marketing to North Americans with English-speaking crews, so for a complete French experience, check out their offerings.
  • To judge the best value as opposed to just the lowest price, watch for how many “extras” are included in the base rate – port excursions, alcohol, balcony cabins, airport transfers in Paris -- that could add to the cost.
  • For maximum privacy and comfort, consider splurging on a balcony cabin, where you can relax and watch the changing Seine riverside tableau pass by.
  • If you want a French wine country cruise, look farther south in France to rivers that run through Burgundy or Bordeaux.
  • Some cruise lines combine Seine cruises with voyages through the Burgundy wine country (the Saône and Rhône rivers), making for a two-week cruise with a connecting bus ride.

Additional details

You will find that many Seine river cruises are offered as day tours. If you are looking for a longer cruise, be sure to look at the itinerary carefully so you know what the itinerary entails.

Alternatively, many longer Seine cruises are included on longer trips - rather than existing as a stand alone cruise.

If you are planning to take a Seine river cruise in 2019, be sure to book early. Seine river cruises usually stop in Normandy, which is expected to be very busy during 2019 with visitors paying their respects and observing the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Landings during World War II.

What is the weather like?

Seine River cruises are offered year round, and while the weather conditions are mostly predictable, you can expect the odd rainstorm any month of the year. So come prepared!

Weather along the Seine is generally very hot during the summer - with some relief from river breezes. In the winter, expect a chill in the air and maybe even a snow flurry or two.

As with many travel destinations around the world, the shoulder seasons are some of the most pleasant times to visit the Seine. Not just for the weather, but for the beautiful colors along the shore - fall oranges and reds, and bright spring greens and pinks.

Although winter cruises along the Seine hold a special charm as the European Christmas spirit permeates from small villages to the cities.
