What's this trip about?

A famed cultural and literary heritage and a gorgeous landscape happily converge in Wales. We’ve created a fantastic hiking adventure that journeys into the verdant Wye Valley, along the wild sandstone bluffs of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and up to craggy Mt. Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales and England. As we explore from the castle-topped ridges of the Brecon Beacons to the lakes and mountains of Snowdonia, we’ll hear the unique Welsh language, one of Europe’s oldest living tongues, meet local scholars, visit Dylan Thomas’s home, and enjoy wonderful meals bursting with local flavor and tradition. Overnights are in historic coaching inns and a country house nestled between rugged mountains and the Irish Sea.

Our adventures span every corner of the globe, and the quality of our itinerary design and leadership has earned us one of the highest rates of repeat travelers in the business. Our core philosophy is elegantly simple: it’s not just where you travel, but how you travel that sets our trips apart. The magic of the how at Wilderness Travel comes from our expert Trip Leaders —the undisputed best in the business, a meticulously planned and artfully executed itinerary, and the camaraderie and just plain fun of traveling with a small group of like-minded people. The where is up to you—read on for more about our amazing destinations!

At Wilderness Travel, we firmly believe that responsible tourism can be an extraordinary tool to connect people across borders and cultures. Our commitment to ecologically responsible, low-impact tourism goes back to the beginnings of the company, and we actively support a variety of conservation and cultural groups, and are founding members and active supporters of a number of organizations dedicated to responsible travel.

Everywhere we travel we bring our own special Wilderness Travel style along. In Europe, we stay at charming small hotels where we are welcomed as family, and enjoy elegant picnics of delightful local specialties and fine wines. In Africa, our safari camps are downright luxurious and our exclusive lodges are located with exceptional access to wildlife. Our Himalayan and Andean treks feature our celebrated full-service camping amenities: you’ll sleep comfortably at night in warm sleeping bags in cozy mountaineering tents, dine on wonderful and varied camp meals, and wake up each day to a cup of hot coffee or tea brought right to your tent!

A great trip is made up of fine hotels, glorious hikes, superb cuisine, and most importantly, a Trip Leader whose passion and knowledge brings it all together. We’re particular about who leads our trips because your experience depends so much on their skills. Our leaders come from all over the world, and from all walks of life—our roster includes naturalists, authors, teachers, archaeologists, art historians, and mountaineers. Their backgrounds are diverse, but they all share a passion for guiding, a thorough knowledge of the destinations they work in, and a real joy in introducing you to their favorite places, people, and behind-the-scenes spots you would never find on your own.

Accommodation

,The Bear Hotel Crickhowell, Wales Located in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, this former coaching inn is brimming with charm and old world hospitality, yet has all the necessary modern comforts. With 30 rooms decorated in unique style, an award-winning restaurant—the ideal place to have your first taste of world-renowned Welsh lamb, and an antique-filled bar serving an array of single malts, The Bear is the ideal base for exploring the Wye Valley. Warpool Court St. David's, wales Set on 15 acres at the edge of St. David's Peninsula inside Pembrokeshire National Park, The Warpool overlooks one of the most stunning stretches of coastline in Europe. Enjoy your meals prepared with locally-sourced Pembrokeshire ingredients in the dining room overlooking manicured gardens and the glimmering sea. Voted one of St. David's Best Loved Hotels, The Warpool is  just a 15-minute walk from medieval St. David's Cathedral, the shops and restaurants in town, and the Peninsula's lovely beaches. It makes the perfect base for our hikes, with the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path winding just steps from the hotel's door. The Erskine Arms Conwy, Wales This traditional, 10-room coaching inn set within the medieval walls of Conwy is just a stone's throw from Conwy Castle. It's believed to have been built between the 1830s-1840s and was owned by the Erskine family, prominent landowners of the area. Of note, author Charlotte Bronte stayed here while on her honeymoon. The staff is very welcoming, and breakfasts are hearty, with great sausages and dry-cured bacon. And, you’ll want to taste some of the local ales in the cozy pub. Plas Dinas Country House Bontnewydd, Wales The Plas Dinas Country House enjoys an exquisite location on 15 acres in Snowdonia, nestled between rugged mountains and the Irish Sea. Once the family home of the Armstrong-Jones family, whose son Anthony married Princess Margaret, the Queen's sister, this 10-room heritage estate dates back to the 17th century. Set amid lovely gardens, Plas Dinas is a true royal home, full of antiques and family memorabilia, and gives a glimpse into Welsh aristocratic life. Enjoy a classic Welsh breakfast overlooking the verdant gardens, and in the evening sip a glass of sherry in the Drawing Room before a grand dinner by candlelight.
Guides
James Fuss James Fuss is a trekking guide, photographer, cyclist, and chef extraordinaire. Born and raised in South Australia, James found his wanderlust early on family camping trips across Australia. His love of the culinary arts is deep-rooted as well, and as a young chef, he headed off to Europe to expand his repertoire. There he undertook many explorations of the wilds of the British Isles and the Alps— traveling, backpacking, and cycling hidden corners of Europe, and onward to the Himalayas—then returned to Australia to become a guide in the legendary Outback. A WT leader since 1997, James is always up for an adventure, from the mountains of Europe to the shores of Tasmania. “It’s a joy to guide in such divergent places. I love the gastronomic diversity of Europe, especially France. And I’m always happy to help trip members discover the pristine wilderness, unique wildlife, bountiful seafood, and superb wines of Tasmania. Wherever I’m guiding, I try to make a journey a once-in-a-lifetime experience for people.” James is conversant in French, German, and Nepali, and when he’s not guiding, he enjoys camping, boating, and fishing with family and friends.
