"My daughter and I signed up for the 7 day Salkantay and Inca trek. We completed the Salkantay, but were suffering from altitude sickness and stomach problems, plus I was experiencing severe pain in hip and a limp that was getting worse by the day. Our symptoms were dismissed and we were never checked for oxygen levels or offered oxygen that was supposed to have been available. Instead we were told we needed to have a positive attitude and press on. We couldn’t continue and asked for horses to leave and we were told they weren’t available and the only way out was to trek 8 hours, which we did alone. Our porters never even joined us until the very end when we finally reached motor bikes. We spent extra money for bikes for us and our porters, then had to pay for a bus, and then a taxi. We are still waiting to hear about any refund. We were also told there was no ability for any kind of emergency rescue even if we had broken a leg or had a more dire medical emergency. We were told that helicopters cannot access most locations and if they can they take over a day and a ton of money. We came home also with bacterial infections and are still sick a week later. The Salkantay was the most beautiful trek imaginable, but people need to understand the seriousness of the risks. We were also told that many people have died on this trek. Please think very carefully before signing up for this very risky and grueling adventure. They were supposed to be refunding, but all they really seem to care about is my review..."

The climbing guides and Kili fighters (porters) were so kind, helpful and motivating. We are vegan and the food they provided was incredible. I didn’t need any of the “just in case” food I packed for myself. The safari guides were also kind, funny, engaging and very knowledgeable. We saw so many animals and birds. "We love Vaya Adventures. Gabrielle Venturi has treated us like family and taken superb care of us for almost 10 years. She'll be putting up with us again as we take another expedition cruise with Aurora next year. She's a gem!!!! On our trip to the Arctic Circle in August, our fellow passengers were delightful, and we seemed to all share common interests and a real desire to experience this new and interesting wonderland. The trip provided us with a whole new appreciation for the lives of the Inuits who live in the region. We were very fortunate to have two Inuits on board to share their thoughts and experiences of growing up in the remote villages of the Arctic. "This company is unbelievable. Firstly I get a cancellation of the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica trip. The compensation in comparison to a like for like trip was peanuts and the increase was 1000s more! Then I read numerous customers are getting switched onto trips without paying the difference. I ring them again and they promise to swop me for no extra charge. This was agreed with their team leader. I waited until getting a cabin on Fram without getting too excited but sure enough we were swopped and I was so excited and looking forward to the trip of a lifetime. Yesterday I got a devastating email saying ‘i am reaching out to you since regardless of his statement that we will be able to price match you, this request was denied by our Revenue department and we are not able to honour the price match.’ After speaking to this new team leader she had very little to say, no excuse or justification just she was sorry. There is no way we can afford the 1000s extra they are asking for the same trip. We are now left heartbroken for a second time. This company has no care or consideration for its customers and I for one will not use them again and I will tell anyone who will listen how shocking they are!"

Eco, Sustainable & Green Travel Tour Selection Trips

  • Destinations like Costa Rica, the Galapagos, and some of the Balkan countries in Eastern Europe make eco and sustainable tourism a priority - these can be some great places to start looking for inspiration!
  • When it comes to Eco tours, low impact is the goal. For accommodation, think tents or lodges built with sustainable materials vs large hotels and resorts. For transport, taking local transport as much as possible is best - taking trains and buses over private cars or short-haul/domestic flights. Check what type of accommodation and transport is included in your trip.
  • Read the sustainable or responsible travel commitment of your tour operator before booking. Many, like G Adventures or Intrepid Travel, have foundations that they have set up to support sustainable tourism and setup projects to support local communities in developing countries where they operate trips to, or to support endangered wildlife. 
  • Pick a tour that uses local country guides, who can show you the best of Eco or Sustainable Tourism in their destination(s). 
  • Eco friendly activities look to protect nature, wildlife, and the environment, so make sure any trips you pick do not include riding of wild animals (such as elephants) or (directly or indirectly) encourage the keeping of animals in captivity for tourism purposes.  
  • When going on safari, look for operators that prioritize the protection of animals and respect them in their natural habitats. 
  • While we often can’t avoid talking flights to reach our travel destination, there are carbon offset programs available which you can choose to contribute to - your tour operator may be able to advise further on the options available.
